Big Peat Bottling Note

A big bodied blended malt from Islay. It comprises malt whisky from Coal Ila, Bowmore, Ardbeg and Port Ellen. Big Peat is a great whisky with lots of peaty character.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Warm slabs of tangy peat. Hints of chocolate, coffee and cedar with spices, walnuts and almond. A touch of cinnamon with oily smoke.

Palate: Simple, easy going, but delicious. Notes of heavy smoke, cut grass, peanut, spices and peat.

Finish: Quite abrupt with cut grass, coastal notes and smoke.

Big Peat Reviews

Superb.

Yikes. Amazing.

A nice peaty blend is refreshing ...

Love the peat. But in totality, lacks flavor to back the smoke.

27th October 2018

Satisfyingly peaty!

As the name implies, plenty of peat! Love it!

True to Islay, Smokey Hot Peat

So smokey there should be a piece of pork in it.

Simply the best

Simply the best! Honestly one of the very best Scotch Whiskies I have had the pleasure of tasting.

24th September 2017

Big and peated and great

Goodness gracious, a gorgeously great Scotch. All that you could wish for in an Islay Whiky - it is indeed Big and Peat(y). I personally loved it and will be buying again.

"Good blended shot" Fu84,Italy

Heavy but quite gentle...Also a blend can be delicious if well balanced.
Bowmore soul, caol ila heart...one of the best blend in my personal collection, and opinion.

Smooth and party,a must for islay lovers.

27th June 2016

Not bad.

Peaty whiskies aren't normally my cup of tea but I have to admit this one packs a lot of punch.

The nose is of smoke and earth but surprisingly smooth on the palate.

I personally would have this again as I found it an enjoyable whisky and I would recommend.

20th February 2016

Over hyped.

Not that good. Don't really understand why this gets such rave reviews. Not much peat, just lemon and some wood and a lot of dryness. Not a fan.....

I love!

Fabulous! I, and everyone else loved it!

The taste of Islay

What a wonderful delivery of Islay special liquid.... Fun design and great liquid. Thanks

Ignore blends at your peril

Big Peat proves that blends can hold their own in value and quality and they really offer something different. Considering its provenance this is a wonderfully balanced dram, the finish is a bit short but i suspect the dry oiliness has a lot to do with that, the nose and the wonderful palate more than make up for it. Excellent stuff and a must try for any smoke heads.

Not entirely what I was expecting...

I approached this whisky expecting a big Islay "peat hit", perhaps something similar to a Laphroaig or Ardbeg 10-year old. What I actually got was something a bit different. There's a surprisingly strong marzipan sweetness on the nose and palate (the Bowmore?), followed mainly by a Caol Ila-like oiliness. Not a lot to the finish unfortunately.

Neither a bad whisky nor a great whisky. However, I will add that the X-mas cask strength version is a significant improvement over the 46%.

the mymic

It delivers. If anyone were to ask me what an islay whisky should be i'd stick a glass of this under their nose. Clearly young but nothing impure or newmakey about it. If your a peat head this is worth your time and money.

Dont knock it till you try it

Very rough neat. Added an ice cube(or water) and changed 100 %
Very good

Bad

Does not deliver.

Not a favorite

I really wanted to like this -- am a huge fan of Islay malts, particularly Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila and Bruichladdich, and had hopes this would be the first Islay blend I could enthusiastically recommend. And...not so much. Sure, it's got some phenols, but it tastes rather like a mashup of short-aged tails from each of the distilleries that contributed -- sadly, a case where the whole is less than the sum of the parts. Spend a little more, and just get a standard expression from any Islay distillery, and you'll be happier.

what did they do to it?

im a big fan of islay malts so i figured it would like this, but boy was i wrong. maybe i just need to give it another taste but it wasnt enjoyable at all. its like they isolated the peat flavor and got rid of any other taste to the whisky, oddly giving it an almost tequila-like taste.

Islay in a Glass

the ultimate taste of Islay - peated, sweet, fresh, maritime, citrus....

Big Peat Islay Malt

really excellent Islay Malt here. as name suggests it is big and peated but with a real sweet, burnt sugar earthy, saltiness too. I've fallen head over heels in love with Big Peat!

Bang for your Buck

You can't go wrong with this one !

16th December 2013

Great stuff

Totally agree, very smooth, very dangerous indeed.

One of my favourites.

8th November 2012

Very smooth, very dangerous

One of the best I've had. Will be ordering some more!

9th October 2012

great

not much to say.. it reminds me when i was young.. i feel nature when tasting big peat...

18th September 2011

Young and peaty

I like Islays, but this one was just a little too much for me. I didn't find it restrained and civilised peat - it was industrial and overwhelming peat on a citrussy background. Not subtle enough, and personally for the same price as this I'd go for an Ardbeg 10y every time.

Chris

Opens up with a briny, youthful, slightly soapy Caol Ila freshness with hints of bog myrtle underpinned by the Ardbeg fruit. There’s plenty of slightly retrained and civilised peat smoke, which becomes more medicinal given time.

The palate is quite youthful with hints of new make cereal. Sooty and oily combination of Ardbeg and Bowmore with the Coal Ila freshness following on the middle along with some lovely rubbery notes. Generous and mouth filling, so oily now it coats the mouth. Good depth, not overly coastal, again one suspects that these casks have been on the mainland for some time. In saying that it the saltiness kind of lurks at the edges, and it has a good peat intensity, so I think the name is justified.
