Some whiskies adopt the dark. Others are born in it. Both are moulded by it, however. This Clynelish was, it spent a finishing period of 3 months in tiny, specially coopered, fresh, first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks with huge surface area to volume ratios prior to bottling. When it finally saw the light, it was nothing short of blindingly good. Wayne, Bane, thank you ma'an. Jim Murray gave it 90.5 points in the 2015 Whisky Bible.
Nose: Mixed candied peels, dried apricot, dates and a little chutney tang. Buttered crumpets, fudge and honeysuckle. A little jaffa cake too, all underpinned by some rich walnut.
Palate: Chocolate HobNobs, rich, dark caramels and pleasantly pervading peach skin.
Finish: More peach and dates especially, slightly sweet and nutty.
Overall: This is still undoubtedly Clynelish, only it's gone over to the dark side - and we're loving that!
