Another stunner from Carsebridge, independently bottled without chill filtration or additional colouring at cask strength by Hunter Laing for The Sovereign range in 2018. This single grain Scotch whisky was distilled all the way back in 1973 before it was matured in a single refill hogshead cask for 45 years. Given that the distillery closed all the way back in the 1980s, expressions like this are becoming increasingly rare.
Oak-y vanilla, chewy toffee and zesty marmalade lead among stewed ginger root, pear skins and milk chocolate.
Dried apricot and bitter orange drenched in butterscotch sauce, before crumbly chocolate digestives and lemon rind emerge.
Almond pastries and a flicker of ginger spice linger.
