Though the Caledonian Distillery is closed, indie bottlers sometimes get their hands on casks of its single grain so we can taste its great whisky! For example, Douglas Laing has bottled up this 45 year old example of Caledonian's single grain for the Xtra Old Particular range, which is reserved for rare and exciting expressions. It was distilled back in 1976 and left to mature in a refill hogshead until 2021, when it was finally bottled up with an outturn of 295 bottles.
Tasting Note by The Producer
Anticipate live, fresh fruit salad coupled with a damp, spiced oak character on the nose. The palate is deliciously thick with a real creamy texture, showing a moreish caramel cream quality and honeyed cereal. The long finish linger wonderfully with a citrus tang alongside zesty hard candy and syrup.
