Bruichladdich

From peaty powerhouses Octomore we welcome a new smokeshow of whiskies. 14.2 5 Year Old was made much like 14.1, distilled from 100% Scottish barley that was malted to 128.9 ppm. For this whisky, however, maturation took place in a combination of oloroso and Amarone casks. Smoke and sherry is a classic pairing so this should be good.
Nutmeg, black pepper, peat sticks, fruitcake, and red berries.
Burnt coffee beans, dried fruit, maritime peat, salty mineral seaweed, liquorice, and cinnamon.
Bonfire embers and sherry-stained wood.

The master of malt tasting notes are bang on for this beauty, however what they don’t convey is the strength of those flavours, the initial intensity of flavours is an assault on the senses, followed by big waves of secondary flavours finishing in the deep satisfying after smoke. For me at 57% it benefits from the tiniest drop of water to help release some of the initial flavours. While it seems extravagant to buy at this price, you need so very little in a glass it goes a very long way!!
