Douglas Laing
Scotland
Single Malt
Independently bottled Benrinnes single malt, drawn from a sherry butt which aged the whisky for 19 years - from July 1999 to December 2017. A release of 253 bottles from the ever-popular Douglas Laing Old Particular bottling range.
Honey-drenched raisin, sodabread with salted butter, a whiff of burnt oak.
Crunchy brown sugar and blueberry syrup, with a touch of stewed plum bringing warmth to the flavour profile.
Dates, barley and a hint of caramel.
All told, the bottle is interesting, but kind of a failed experiment. I found that the tannins competed a bit too much with the sherried sugar wood in the butt. Was this butt toasted? It seems so, which should have helped but did not.
