Koskenkorva Vodka Sauna

A cask-aged Finnish vodka from Koskenkorva. Evidently, the inspiration to age their vodka came from the smokey heat from an old sauna - hence the name.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Mineral-rich, with a full-bodied kick of smoke.

Reviews for Koskenkorva Vodka - Sauna Barrel
10/10 would get in the vodka sauna again.
The addition of the sauna barrel really gave this vodka the flavour of sweaty bodies mixed with charred oak to deliver a savoury palette that I particularly enjoyed. 10/10 would get in the vodka sauna again.

Lovely and unexpected
I'm not a huge vodka drinker, and "sauna barrel" did not exactly bring to mind pleasant odour associations, but I gambled and tried this anyway, and it was a definite win.

I think it's important to note that the smokey/woody flavours are subtler than you may expect; this is definitely NOT the fake-bacon-flavour assault to the senses that I feared. And in fact, contra to the Chaps' tasting note, I think "smokey" as a descriptor almost doesn't apply -- a soft cedar-y wood flavour is far more prominent to me. Anyway, you don't have to be a peat-head to enjoy this, although I'd encourage peat-heads to give it a try, too.

Complicated and interesting on its own, but quiet enough to be a versatile addition to cocktails. Permanently on my home bar's rotation list.

Absolutely awesome
Absolutely awesome. I spent many years in Finland, enjoying many a sauna. Finns add saunatippat - sauna drops - to the water they throw on the sauna 'stove'. The main flavours of the drops are tar, eucalyptus and pine. Sounds odd I know. This vodka has the flavour of these drops. It absolutely reminds me of Finnish saunas. I adore the taste. I would highly recommend giving this a go. It may not be for everyone but I believe those who like the taste will absolutely adore this vodka.
