    Lindores Abbey Aqua Vitae

Lindores Abbey's Aqua Vitae is distilled in pot stills and then infused with a blend of spices and herbs, including cleavers, lemon verbena, douglas fir and sweet cicely, all of which are foraged from the grounds of the ancient Abbey. Good enough to enjoy simply over ice with a twist of orange. An intriguing spirit with a good bit of history behind it - the earliest Aqua Vitae produced at Lindores Abbey's historic site was all the way back in 1494! We're very excited to see what comes next from these folks...

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Through a fragrant piney aroma comes fleshy white fruit, salted caramel, sweet aniseed, fresh herbs and a rich medley of baking spices. There’s plenty of stewed raisins, marmalade, floral honey and lemon sherbets in support.

    Palate

Fruitcake, orange peel, nutty dark chocolate and brown sugar initially, with more aromatic lemon citrus notes underneath and a return of that ginger, clove and cinnamon mix.

    Finish

A touch of pot still spice and woody tannins linger among the sweeter dried fruit notes.

If I could give this 6 stars I would

Amazing!!! Unlike anything I’ve tried before and I look at myself as a bit of a drinks buff. I saw the bottle on the back bar in The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh and it caught my eye as looked beautiful. The bartender was very knowledgeable about the product and explained it was called Aqua Vitae meaning ‘water of life’ in Latin and was from a new whisky distillery in Fife called Lindores Abbey. He went on to tell me about the fascinating history surrounding both the Abbey and the spirit , I love a drink with a bit of heritage and a good story behind it, this was ticking all the right boxes for me and I hadn’t even tried it yet. I asked for a dram and to my surprise I was asked if I’d like to have it with a mixer. The bartender explained it was a malt spirit with added botanicals and spices and could be enjoyed either like a whisky or a gin. This caught the interest of my wife, not normally a malt lover, so I had one on the rocks and she went with the recommendation with ginger ale and orange peel. Both drinks were stunning and I could imagine enjoying both as a winter dram and a summer cocktail. It’s a bit more sweet and herbaceous than a whisky but more depth of character than a gin. We are now onto our 3rd bottle purchase so thought it about time I left a review. Couldn’t recommend it enough, great in cocktails all year round . Great to see someone exploring something other than Gin. Top marks Lindores.

    Unique and complex

Tried this at a new distilleries tasting and managed to get a bottle while still in stock. For a really young drink, it’s surprisingly complex and deep, with so many different botanical flavours. Clove and anise are easy to pick out but there’s much more under the surface, with orange, Rosemary and other fruits and herbs coming through. Can be enjoyed neat or mixed

    Fascinating, complex and delicious

The tasting notes by the MoM chaps above hit the nail on the head. Wonderfully spiced and fruity, it's a delicious and complex product that's unique to most other products on the market and leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy. Pairs surprisingly well with chocolate and coffee as well as tropical flavours like passionfruit and pineapple. First got a bottle last year and enjoyed every dram poured - recently obtained a new bottle so keen to crack it open! Mixes very easily with ginger beer, rhubarb soda or even cream soda. Switch it out for gin in a negroni, whisky in an old fashioned, rum in a mojito. Versatile and exciting stuff from the Kingdom.
