The stunning special release from Zacapa. This Guatemalan classic won Gold at the International Rum Festival, and won the Platinum award in the Super-Premium category in 2002. This is an incredible extra old rum, which picks up awards wherever it goes.
Calves leather, brown sugar, molasses, bourbon, hints of cedar, pipe tobacco, fruit, chocolate and brandy butter.
Absolutely amazing intensity with waves of soft brown sugar, toffee, spicy oak, cedar and pipe tobacco.
Long, warming finish in sweet, soft spices.

The Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Year Old rum is delicious, so I assumed that this would be a step up. Unfortunately it's not. This is bland and tasteless and I must agree with most of the other reviewers that the 23 Year Old is by far the better choice.
The title is a bit misleading, as this is without a doubt a good rum. However, as the "standard" 23yr Zacapa is a lot like this but bolder and more affordable, I see little point in this. While I agree that the standard version can sometimes be slightly too sweet, toning down the main quality that Zacapa is known for doesn't work all that well, as there are others that do this direction of flavour far better.
This is great but the beauty of the 23 yo is the abundance of flavour. I like the XO but I LOVE the 23!!
I like my rums, I like them dark and spicey and powerful. A colleague offered me a glass of this at a xmas party and waited in anticipation for what he knew was coming. I first put my nose over the glass and was instantly blown away by its power, it smells like what I imagine Sex Panther should smell like. Spices, Vanilla, Fruit, Fire, Wood and Toffee so intense. Then the taste. It lasts, and in a good way. It warms you through and leaves you not sure how much more you should have. To keep drinking or to savour. I immediately ordered a bottle to be delivered home to the UK to share with my father and brother and will look out for this in every fine bar I visit. Thank you.
I like the 23yr old better, smoother finish and bold flavor better..
