Ron Zacapa from Guatemala is a great favourite here at Master of Malt. El Alma is a limited edition bottling from the distillery's Heavenly Cask series. It's blended using the solera system, and including rums aged between six and 23 years, matured in a mix of bourbon and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.
On the nose you'll find baking spices, toffee, orange peel and toasted nuts. The palate is sweet and spicy with a long finish of almonds and salted caramel.

The best Ron Zacapa I’ve ever hand was the 2014 edition Reserva Limitada where the rum had a slight herbal note to it. OMG it was amazing ! I have 3 dark rums that share my number one spot and that was one of them. Anyway this one is good even though it’s not really a special reserva. It’s taken on a little salt note and that’s a wonderful note to have in a rum or even a whisky. Old Pulteney comes to mind before they made a massive mistake changing their casks from fino to oloroso. Big mistake ! the salty briny note has gone and the zing from the fino sherry that complimented has also gone. Imagine changing the thing that you are famous for after raking in a fortune. Crazy ! Never change Ron Zacapa !
