Reviews for Dictador Insolent XO
Liquid caramel.
Dreadful stuff. Doesn't deserve to be called rum. It's like drinking liquid caramel, and how this price tag is remotely justified I do not know. Having had several bottles of Dictador's Best of 1979, this was very disappointing to the extent I mixed it with Doorly's 5 year old to make it drinkable, doing the Doorly's no favours.

Not a high end rum - Caramel Syrup
Don't get it. This is rum that is definitely infused with sweetening. There is no complexity to this rum. If you like syrup then maybe it will work. Had a glass, cleaned my palate with water and poured a Zacapa 23. Ahhhh!!!

This is what Rum is about
WOW! This is what a rum should be like. Vanilla and coffee on the nose, first time I’ve just been “given” the notes instead of having to work for them. Mouth feel is amazing, my only problem is it’s too easy to drink. My first Dictador rum and I’ve clearly been missing out. This isn’t a rum that overthinks it, this is a rum that wants you to sit there and enjoy drinking it.

It’s a keeper
I have both the insolent and perpetual, and I can’t work out which is better. They are both 5/5 rums. Definitely coffee flavours, but my palette is rubbish. You can’t go wrong with either one. Enjoy!

Reccommended
One of the best rums I've tasted. It has the aroma of toffee, Butterscotch, Vanilla, Cinnamon and Nutmeg when poured into a glass. The first sip reveals heated oak spices carried through the palate with honeyed butterscotch and toffee. There is no afterburn what so ever and to be honest I had a lot of difficulty putting the bottle away to save for another night because I could have easily finished off the entire bottle in one sitting.

Complicated, interesting, initially scary but not one I'd buy again
This, alas, is not for me. I guess that I should have requested a sample since they're available but I decided to jump straight in and get a whole bottle! It smells.. interesting when opened, hard to put my finger on it. On first drinking after pouring into the glass, it tastes very very medicinal - like a really strong tree sap taste. At this point, I was really disappointed! Interestingly, it changes significantly in the glass - after a few minutes, the medicinal taste has retreated a lot and it tastes sweet, like cinder toffee. After a few minutes more, that seems to recede a little and it's quite a gentle and pleasant rum. There is very little burn when swallowing, though there is a quite pleasant touch of heat on the tongue while you drink it. Maybe I have just tastes for something a little simpler.. this is a complex rum that I'm glad I've tried (the way in which it changed so much was intriguing and something I've experienced with some wines but never rums) but I'll not buy more, nor could I really recommend it.

Smooth, complex, a pleasure unmatched.
If you like all of the great flavor but want a smooth mild burn . . . This is it!!! What you hope to taste when you want the complex level of a hard alcohol straight up, so enjoyable. Aficionados, enjoy your strong taste and the rest of us need to look no further.
