“Having tried a few PM pot still rums, this is much in line with those. Remember this is old school, dry, peppery.. Back bone to many navy style rums. If you want a sweet fix this won't be it, but is a good representation of PM style rums. ”

Description

How could anyone forget that they had a stash of rum from Guyana's Diamond distillery knocking about? Well, they didn't forget... it was just such a small stash that it was waiting for the right occasion. And here that occasion is! Produced using Diamond's legendary wooden Port Mourant Still and matured for 11 years, this rum makes the perfect addition to the Forgotten Gems collection, which heroically salvages delicious, but tiny portions of precious liquid to share with us all. A release of 54 bottles.

Nose

A herbaceous start leads to funky layers of plantain, balsamic poached fruit, and earthy oak char.

Palate

Dry and crisp with toasted sugar and fiery peppercorns, while banana bread and that poached fruit from the nose nestle beneath.

Finish

Vibrant layers of dark toffee and grassy sugar linger.

Port Mourant for sure

Having tried a few PM pot still rums, this is much in line with those. Remember this is old school, dry, peppery.. Back bone to many navy style rums. If you want a sweet fix this won't be it, but is a good representation of PM style rums.

Punches above its' 50% ABV

Diamond Distillery (Port Mourant Still) 11 Year Old, Forgotten Gems, 50% ABV, £46.95 MoM. Not a huge amount of ‘depth’ to this and a somewhat ‘thin’ mouthfeel. It isn’t sweet, in fact, I’d go so far as to call it ‘dry’. It’s ‘clean & crisp’ and has more than enough peppery tongue tinglers to really show off the 50% ABV. In fact, I’ve had 60% ABV rums that appear to have less alcohol. I could describe this as ‘fiery’. I suspect some people might want to add a few drops of water. Good value.

Alcohol with a punch!

This rum is alcohol forward and, to me, feels more like it's in the higher 50s. It isn't a complex rum but all the flavours that come through are generally very pleasant. Master of Malt's Tasting Notes are accurate, especially regarding the fiery pepper that comes from the 50% ABV. To me, the rum seemed slightly 'thin' on mouth feel but still reasonably good value for money. Pity we don't discover the year it was distilled!
