Diamond Distillery Port Mourant Pot Still Rum 11 Year Old 2008 (Master of Malt)

We've polished up a real diamond here to join our own collection of splendid bottlings. No really – this superb rum hails from Guyana's Diamond distillery! Produced in April 2008 in the distillery's famed Port Mourant wooden pot still, the only one of its kind still in operation today, this ought to be an exciting release for rum enthusiasts to sample. The rum matured for 11 years in a refill barrel, with a total of 205 bottles disgorged in June 2019.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

A good dose of vegetal funk, plantain, and meaty brine is accompanied by earthen vanilla and drying oak.

    Palate

Toffee and chilli flakes tangle in this light-bodied expression, with more plantain (charred this time) and tinned peaches in syrup.

    Finish

Quite herbaceous towards the end, with treacle toffee and prickles of peppery heat.

Interesting Rum with a lot going on

Interesting Rum with a lot going on. Packs a bit of a tough punch and is full of flavour. For the price its decent.

don't buy if you want rum, nothing like the tasting notes

Absolutely shocked, I was very much looking forward to tasting this with my son on a weekend away. First taste didn't even taste like a rum, everyone that tasted it thought it was a whisky, no matter how many we had it never tasted like rum. So disappointed, has made me very weary about trying anything new

Light, a bit rough, but with a bit of complexity and weirdness

Smell is really distinctive. Light volatiles and something slightly musky and perhaps a little dirty. I haven't tried Caroni but perhaps there's something diesel like in there akin to that. Taste is all that with a slight funk and a big burn. This is light and slightly oily but comes with a huge kick too. Subtle this is not. The flavour evolves into a really long finish that's extremely dry and a bit tannic. It reminds me quite a bit of Cadenhead's blended rum, and also is the most whisky like rum I have tried. I put that down to the continental aging. Yet, at the same time, it's definitely rum in there, just a rather challenging rum, bottled a bit young, and really not like like El Dorado offerings at all. It lacks the depth of the demerera flavours and the caramel added to the barrels. Instead, it's punchy and interesting, and the finish is super long.

    Didn't want to review this...

This is a lovely rum, which I came across searching for Port Morant rum. I loved it so much I considered not reviewing it due to the limited number of bottles (I want them all to myself) but since someone else let the cat out the bag, here goes. Certainly agree with the MoM notes, though I'd add flambé bananas to the nose. The rum is dry, musty and funky, fruity, pepper, complex, ever-evolving on the palate. But it is challenging and not for everyone (I've read negative comments on far less offensive rums than this). If you love your rum rich and sugary, this isn't for you. If you like it drier and more complex, this is still not for you. It's all for me. Please don't buy this rum unless it is a gift for me :D

    Intriguing and beguiling

This is quite an intriguing rum, the notes are spot on, there's definitely a chilli/pepper vibe going on. If you like a drier rum, this is a must have! Absolutely exquisite and a steal considering prices of other single still rums these days.. Well done MoM
