A rather intriguing rum from Thailand's Chalong Bay, brought to us as part of La Maison du Whisky's New Vibrations collection. The sugarcane-based rum spent 26 months resting in a cask that previously held Japanese shochu – certainly not something you come across every day!
Both fresh and heady. Restoring succulent sugarcane notes, the initial aroma is extremely fruity (pineapple, pear), milky (almond, rice), and vegetal (sugarcane). With aeration, scents of tuberose, geranium, and mustard seed gradually take over the olfactory space.
Elegant, dynamic. The palate’s initial impression is subtly vanilla, lemony, and herbal. Lithe, the mid-palate pours freshly pressed sugarcane juice onto the tongue. More substantial, the finish evokes fibrous and liqueur-like sugarcane.
Long, blossoming. Notes of vanilla, coconut milk, and aromatic plants (rosemary, sage) give way to gentle spices (cinnamon, grated ginger) and honeyed (agave) and indulgent (rice pudding) flavours.
