Here we have the Original Spiced Rum from ARLU, the brainchild of the same folks behind Didsbury Gin! The liquid is distilled at Guyana’s ever-wonderful Diamond Distillery, and then blended in Manchester with a whole host of aromatic spices. A spiced tipple that'll do well with all the classic pairings, especially ginger beer.
Brought this on a whim and have to say very very impressed. A very smooth full flavoured rum. Lots of natural sweetness, and the spice is subtle rather than very deep and dark. Very very drinkable on it's own or with a mixer. No harsh alcohol at all. Brilliant sweet flavourful rum, especially for the price.
I’m not overly keen on Spiced Rums it has to be said, but as the saying goes, Arlu is the exception to the rule. I love this rum because it’s got tonnes of sweetness going on, to accompany the spices, which importantly for me are not too fierce, nor overwhelming. In Arlu, you have a rum that is absolutely bang on the money. Neat it’s amazingly sweet, (but not sickly) with notes of vanilla and butterscotch, bombarding your taste buds, giving this rum the texture more of a liqueur. The alcohol burn is virtually zero, making the need for a mixer redundant. But, if however you wish to add Coca-Cola to Arlu, and turn it into a long drink, then of course it still remains deliciously moreish. And finally in the aftertaste, you get the hit from the spices, which, compared to Kraken, Dark Matters or DMF Spiced for example, are incredibly mellow.
