Panama Extra Añejo - Compañero (1423) Rum 70cl

Although this has an ABV of 54% and claims to be a rum, I would argue it's a rum based spirit drink. The taste, in my opinion, is 90% chocolate and 10% alcohol. This does not come across as a rum and I'm shocked that 1423 released it with their name on it. "Chocolate Bailey's on steroids" would be closer to the truth. This is an insult to rum and to Panama.

Perhaps not for the true rum enthusiast as this could be called a 'spiced' rum, in that it's clearly flavoured. Yes, it's rather sweet having had 28gms sugar adder per litre when 20 is the normally accepted maximum. Not a 'session rum' either, or at least, not in my book. However, as an after-dinner liqueur, it's outstanding, and very powerful, with an ABV of 54%. I do love Panamanian rums! The packaging clearly states that it's a flavoured rum spirit drink!

Oh my goodness. This is a properly chocolately rum. 54% means it's almost Navy Strength, and if you're complaining about that buy something weaker ya landlubbers!

This rum is chocolately excellence, and is an amazing dessert rum. Goes well with sweet treats and cakes.

My one critisim is that it's... not that dark? It's a pale amber, more like a whiskey than a dark rum. But hey! At least that means no added caramel!

There is plenty of chocolate & coffee & brown sugar sweetness all the way.
Chocolate smell , taste will goes all the way to the end & after taste . Suddenly you get a beautiful heat of spice & punchy ABV .I cannot say enough ! Must try

The moment you take a long hard lingering smell of Compañero, it immediately transports you to a chocolate utopia, the aroma is that sublime. The chocolate experience continues in the taste as well as the smell, because drank neat your taste buds are treated to a ton of chocolate notes, making this rum simply delicious. And if all that isn’t enough for you, then the chocolate goodness continues long into the after taste as well. As for the alcohol burn, well that’s pretty much minimal. In Compañero you get a drink that glides down your throat with silky smoothness, making it very enjoyable, either as a sipping rum, or a long drink. Me personally, I prefer it mixed with Coca-Cola, because at 54% VOL, it’s a tad too potent for my liking. Which is a real shame, because had it been closer to 40% VOL, then I’m absolutely positive I’d be describing Compañero Panama as neigh on perfect.
P.s If you want to try a chocolate rum that isn’t so potent as Compañero, then may I suggest Project #173 Chocolate Rum. It’s amazing

Just had this for my from my rum advent calendar. Had a very nice Tastes of chocolate orange. Will definitely be asking Santa for one of these. A nice end of the evening tipple.
