Midleton Very Rare Chestnut Edition
Try a world's first
Secondary maturation in Irish sweet chestnut casks has never been done before. This new edition changes that.
Midleton Very Rare Chestnut Edition
To create Midleton Very Rare Chestnut Edition, the distillery's signature light, medium and heavy pot still whiskeys were initially matured in first-fill and refill bourbon barrels. Master distiller Kevin O'Gorman selected parcels of whiskey aged between 12 to 19 years, then placed them in casks made from six sweet chestnut trees for a further five years. The Cappoquin Estate in County Waterford provided the timber for bespoke casks. This one-of-a-kind release is bottled at a cask strength of 56.1% ABV, non-chill-filtered.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
Honey-drizzled red apple and caramelised orange peel, followed by milk chocolate, toffee fudge and vanilla. Nutmeg, cinnamon and fragrant sandalwood build around the sweetness, with a little nuttiness and an earthy woodland note underneath.
Palate:
Big spice to start, with cracked black pepper and a prickle of chilli oil, before sweeter notes of red cola cubes, chocolate and vanilla emerge. Orchard fruits and bright orange peel bring freshness, while soft wood tannins and delicate herbs add depth to the rich, full-bodied pot still texture.
Finish:
Tropical fruit, warming pot still spices, sandalwood and chocolate sweetness lingers beneath the peppery heat.
