Kyrö Game of Thrones whisky has arrived at Master of Malt, and for two weeks, you can only find them here.

The two official Game of Thrones whiskies are inspired by House Targaryen and its famous motto, Fire and Blood. There’s Whisky of Fire, a smoky and intense 100% smoked malted rye whisky, and Whisky of Blood, a lighter, fruitier 100% malted rye whisky with depth, spice, and sweetness. Both put the liquid first, which is exactly as it should be. A famous name might get you to the shelf. Proper whisky gets you to pour a second glass.

Tasting notes

Kyrö Whisky of Blood is the more elegant side of the pairing, though it still has plenty of rye backbone. Made from 100% malted rye and matured in bourbon and French oak casks, it was bottled at 46% ABV. It shows apple, apricot, beeswax, tonka bean, and chestnut on the nose, followed by sweet fruit, toasted cereals, crème brûlée, and a steady line of rye spice. The name suggests drama, dynasties, but the whisky is bright, textured, and composed.

Kyrö Whisky of Fire takes the Targaryen brief in the obvious direction, but thankfully gives it proper distilling substance. Made from 100% smoked malted rye, matured in bourbon casks, and finished in rum casks, it’s bottled at 46.6% ABV. It's the more forceful of the two releases, but not just a blunt instrument of smoke and branding. The rye brings spice and grip, the bourbon casks add sweet grain and structure, and the rum cask finish rounds things out with darker fruit and a little extra warmth. Fire, yes. Wildfire, no.
