Opihr Oriental Spiced Gin Bottling Note

A London Dry Gin made with botanicals from along the traditional spice route that led back to the UK. Indonesian Cubeb berries, Indian black pepper and Moroccan coriander are all used in this gin, launched by Quintessential Brands in 2013.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Coriander and citrus, gentle juniper and peppery notes.

Palate: More discernible spiciness and juniper with plenty of coriander.

Finish: Refreshing with citrus and spice.

Overall: A handsome gin that's playfully spiced.

Opihr Oriental Spiced Gin Reviews

Step away or you'll regret it.

Truly Hideous. I nearly threw up, and I can drink almost anything!
Aroma is disgusting, my taste buds and olfactory senses didn't know what hit them. And, to make matters worse, it repeated on me.... simply unpleasant and turned my stomach.

23rd November 2020

Love this gin - my new fav

I love this gin. Goes well with standard tonic, and particularly nice with clementine tonic

22nd October 2020

Arm pit or curry aroma

This gonna is not for me. I can happily drink most tipples. Throw me a bottle of chardonnay the dregs of the drinks cabinet but this is a no go for me. It's like drinking a liquidized curry or licking a sweaty pit.

29th August 2020

Spicy fragrant awesome gin

My favorite gin, gorgeous spices... Not one for people who like sweet gins. If you prefer flavourful, floral and spiced gins this is for you - great with fevertree Indian tonic or light tonic, and a squeeze of lime

18th August 2020

Won’t be trying again

Thought my hygiene had taken a nose dive til I realised the smell was coming from my drink
It smells like armpit after an 8 hr shift!

16th August 2020

Gin should not have cumin in it. It would
Be better off with chicken and rice with a naan on the side. Not for me!

10th August 2020

Fabulous! On its own or as a gin martini!

4th August 2020

Truly awful. Bought this as a treat, I’ve always liked Gunpowder Irish Gin so thought this may be similar. Tastes like curry. Please don’t waste your money.

26th July 2020

Hate it or love it

As a gin lover I struggled with this. I found the aroma of body odour difficult to overcome. I typically drink gin straight or in a Martini and haven't yet found a mixer capable of overcoming the power of this one.

10th July 2020

Smooth with spice

Best gin on the market. We love it

28th June 2020

Overpowers everything

Lovely bottle and presentation. But that is the best I can say. Alcoholic cumin comes closest to explaining the taste and smell. Very crude and unappealing to my taste. I have tried, but have yet to find any drink/cocktail where the overwhelming spice does not ruin it.

24th June 2020

Yes, smooth and spicy

Such a pretty , decadent bottle. Gentle spicy and very smooth. Yet not too subtle. Ginger is not mentioned but ginger is the sunset of its taste to me. Nice neat. Brilliant with tonic.

15th June 2020

Amazing spicy aroma

Smooth and very spicy, the aroma is amazing. It’s something completely different so I can understand why it divides opinion. Addictive & I love it.

27th April 2020

Great tasting gin.

Love it with a light tonic and either a slice of orange or grapefruit and of course lots of ice.

10th April 2020

No thanks, not for me !

Quite quite wrong .......just does not work. The other botanicals were completely overpowered by the taste / smell of cumin.

29th February 2020

A gin that divides opinion, for me it’s awful and tastes of sweat...

Awful gin, it smells and tastes like stale sweat! From the reviews it’s clearly it’s a love it or hate it gin. My take is that it’s just not compatible with some people’s tastes buds, just like brussel sprouts.... I’m clearly in the dislike camp

12th January 2020

This one is my new favourite!!!!
I loved it !!!
Fabulous with the FeverTree Aromatic tonic

19th December 2019

My favourite gin now !!!

Absolutely brill, best mixed with Fever Clementine with cinnamon Tonic 😊

14th December 2019

Best gin ever

Still tastes like traditional gin, but better. Love the coriander & pepper flavours

1st December 2019

Not nice

This is probably the worst smelling gin out there ! Really didn’t enjoy it ☹️It really smells of armpits 🤮

30th November 2019

Love it :))))

Absolutely love this !!! My favourite very refreshing with ice & squeeze of orange 🍊

13th October 2019

Dont bother

Absolutely disgusting

7th October 2019

I bought this after reading the reviews and remained skeptical, due to what i had read. I really enjoyed this gin, the flavor was far smoother than I expected. It was lightly spiced and definitely didn’t compare to the revolting Gordons, as previously mentioned. I mixed it with some Fever Tree tonic, fresh lime and a sprig of coriander.
Its presented beautifully and I was thrilled to be able to gift a bottle to a friend.

4th October 2019

Love the gin but the bottle design is poor- have you ever put it to the test in trying to replace the stopper? Twice now I have nipped my skin between the bottle and the stopper- what’s up with a screw top ?

29th August 2019

Different and BAD

Terrible, these spices are not working with gin

6th July 2019

Definitely a favourite!

Lightly spiced, fantastic with Fevertree elderflower tonic & sliver of lime.

23rd June 2019

Spicy not sweet = Excellent

London dry with spice! I can’t get enough of this dry spicy gin no frills apart from the sexy bottle. I 100% love it 😍

4th June 2019

It has an odd aroma it reminds me of sweat. But it is delicious and one of my favourites.

21st May 2019

AVOID - It's Awful!!!

Hideous - I assumed "spiced" meant with it would be spicy or have a kick. It just tastes of coriander, WHICH I HATE!!! What a waste of gin, what am I going to do with the rest of the bottle?

28th April 2019

A new favourite

Great with ginger ale, a lovely warm spicy gin

25th February 2019

Nice if like drinking cumin

This gin is horrible. It’s simply a gin base with cumin in it. Very crude and not in any way pleasant.

19th February 2019

May be something went wrong with the batch from which my bottle came. It tastes exactly like Gordons. Nothing against the green bottle gin but if I wanted Gordons, I could buy Gordons.

24th January 2019

Horrible. Never had a gin I can't drink. Smells and tastes like curry.

28th December 2018

No thank you

Balti in a bottle!

13th December 2018

A break from the norm ...

Love it. Great favour. A real spicy punch. Great with tonic or neat with ice.

25th September 2018

Cardamom spice warming

I love the cardamom spice flavour. Tonic, lime and ribboned cucumber is all it needs. Delicious. Went with my duck legs and spiced plum sauce.

6th September 2018

Unique exotic twist

A unique flavour and stunning.Best with lots of ice and tonic to counterbalance the spice which I found to be moorish (no pun intended!)

2nd September 2018

Fantastic after an Indian meal - but we don't generally drink it otherwise,

A spicy gin. Fantastic after an Indian meal - we both thought so! It is kept for those occasions, or when we want something a bit different.

6th August 2018

The Oriental spices burst through in a G&T

When you make a G and T with Opihr is when you truly note the particular spices of coriander and cardamon and I for one like hat complexity

4th August 2018

I wouldn't recommend this.

Waste of money, too spicy, too experimental...

27th July 2018

A Spicy delight

This is delicious with with Fever Tree Aromatic Tonic and a slice of lime

19th July 2018

I know what to ask for now

This is the most refreshing gin I've tasted. I now know what gin to ask for.

6th June 2018

Highly Experimental flavor.

This is not a gin. A novelty - yes, an experiment with the Spice route - yes. Not a gin. The curried element is off putting. However I imagine a Bloody Mary might suit it. On its own or in tonic it is highly suspect to the taste buds. As there is an element of decay in the flavor. Actually this with bitter lemon and a curry might redeem it. I have tried it sober (6pm) I have tried it tight (late morning) I shuddered both times.

21st May 2018

Delicious, but not for the unimaginative!

This is a lovely, spicy, gin. I see others are getting coriander, but I'm getting cardamom, and other more subtle flavours, and it's delicious! I'm drinking it neat, over ice, which I do with all "special" gins, and it's not going to last long!

12th April 2018

No. Just no.

I like gin. I like to drink it neat, over ice, or in classic cocktails. This one sounded interesting and exiting so I gave it a try. Totally undrinkable neat. Just too much spices, the coriander is overpowering and kills all other flavours. I managed to drink it with tomato juice, Bloody Mary - style (or Red Snapper as they call it (or Bloody Awful as I call it)) , but that is the only combination that sort of works.

7th April 2018

Will give this a miss in the future

Not my bag I’m afraid. Cardimun completely overpowers the flavour.

3rd April 2018

Wonderfully spiced.

Absolutely love this gin. Try it with ginger ale to really get those spicy flavours.

1st April 2018

Awful gin

Spices are over powering and not an enjoyable gin

31st March 2018

Dry spicy notes , lovely

Gorgeous flavours, dry and spicy so not for those who like the fruit gins. If you like the guns that have strong juniper notes you’ll like this . I did

13th March 2018

Absolutely fantastic

I just love this gin, definitely my favourite. Enjoy it best with fever tree aromatic pink tonic with a slice of orange and loads of ice

10th March 2018

Cardomom... Lots of it

First gin I've found undrinkable.

The amount of cardomom in this is seriously off putting. I *love* spices, but this is like drinking perfume with a hint of overly-bitter orange peel - just *awful*!

Maybe it tastes better with tonic water, but I'll never know because this rubbish is going down the sink :/

4th March 2018

Favourite Gin!

This is our favourite Gin! Love the spices which make it unique!

13th January 2018

Wonderful, subtle spices

Definitely a winner for those who like the 'perfumed' spices like cardamom and coriander. Drink it neat and savour the flavours.

8th January 2018

Try in a bar before buying a bottle

Tastes like curry! Wouldn’t buy again

24th December 2017

Overpowering spices hide the delicate flavours

I wanted to like this but all I could taste was overpowering cardamom. I can still taste that and coriander even 15 minutes later. First gin I've ever disliked.

21st September 2017

Would buy regularly

Quintessential taste with elegance and a slight hit x very refreshing

20th September 2017

Too much coriander

I was looking for something different and boy did I find it.
Unfortunately the taste isn't one I enjoyed. I tried it with tonic and found the coriander too strong. With ginger it was more palatable. For me, the spice was a little overdone. Interesting though.

16th September 2017

Taste Buds Tingle

Love the spice of this Gin. Its an electronic blanket in a glass. Another one that goes down a storm when people are round !

25th August 2017

An outstanding and uniquely pleasurable drinking experience

I've been drinking Gin for over 40 years and this has gradually become my all time favourite!
When the bottle empties, I am subject to bouts of depression! :-)

24th August 2017

Heavenly. I will keepthis for myself!

Refreshing with a hint of the east! What's not to like

9th June 2017

Damn good 😀

Drinking Ophir just now after a good BBQ. Saw the bottle in the supermarket and fell in love with the design on the bottle so had to have it. The gin is really good too very smooth, we are enjoying it with old Jamaican ginger beer, chilling , sat here in the garden after a lovely day.

28th May 2017

Love it

Absolutely love this gin. And the fact its the lowest calorie content. It's my favourite with slim line tonic and strawberries.

14th May 2017

Have had one out the bottle and I somehow think it will not get touched except by visitors

Bloody awful. Not much to add Spice overhauls the more traditional botanicals

10th May 2017

Horrible, curry and tonic. Too much cardamom overwhelms this.

6th May 2017

Delicious over ice with a sliver of ginger. I think this could be my new favourite gin!

20th April 2017

Spicy winter warmer

Stunningly good Gin - A great winter warmer when served with ginger ale, a squeeze of lime and a halved chilli pepper to garnish. Go on I dare you !

11th January 2017

Best gin ever!

2nd January 2017

Dundee rain

I loved this gin. its very spicy coriander but made a pineapple cocktail and to my delight it enhanced the coriander flavour
also works as a martini but will look forward to plain over ice ot with one of the fancy tonic waters. can see why it is a "marmite" gin!! People will either love it or hate it

30th December 2016

Mr E Hall

Fantastic smooth taste and for once I can detect the coriander and the pepper and juniper, so a really good Christmas present from my new best friends from Poland who now live in London.

27th December 2016

Lovely gin!

Seriously good gin. Great in summer with a chunk of bashed fresh ginger and some mint leaves but just as good in winter with just a slice of lime or lemon. Fevertree tree tonic goes well with it.

21st December 2016

Coriander hit

As a lover of gin this was suggested to me by a bartender in Penzance. I had it neat with a block of ice and loved it straight away. Lovely spice at first with a long coriander finish. I always make sure to order this when in that bar. Taken neat and now without the ice is my preferred method.

17th December 2016

strong with cardomom

the main flavour here is cardamom, which I do like but I'm a little disappointed it doesn't have more depth.

9th December 2016

great gin and tonic

wedge of grapefruit rind, cardamom seeds and peppercorns with tonic

10th November 2016

Un bonheur

Tout simplement excellent,le meilleur épicé que j'ai bu.
Un arôme détonnant, une odeur de cuir fabuleuse.

1st September 2016

best gin!!

love this, so refreshingly different from traditional G&T with lime/lemon. delicious with slice of orange and a few juniper berries thrown in over ice! would recommend

8th July 2016

Naughty Girl

The cardamom and Coriander are initially a shock but on a bit of experimentation we love it with Capi tonic and slice of orange or mandarin. As a martini , announce it as a Cardomomini - dicky but sets people right beforehand and then serve mini pappadums and mini bhajis to start the fun

20th May 2016

Opihr a nice change.

Quite a gentle but refreshing taste, if you like bursting botanicals then this won't be for you!

3rd April 2016

Not refreshing! Are you Bonkers?

This is a lovely gin, a tasty alternative to the norm. Smarty elegant pants needs a refreshing kick up their ass. P.S. please introduce me to your friend whose sweat smells like gin.

13th March 2016

Lovely afternotes!

You can really taste the black pepper and spices in the finish. Very smooth, even with cheap tonic. Beautiful.

29th February 2016

Not refreshing!

As a lover of gin I do not like this! The taste is quite elegant with a nicely balanced group of spices. However, to me it lacks a refreshing kick and it has a scent that unfortunately is reminiscent of sweat.

15th February 2016

Way above average.

6th February 2016

The perfect winter gin?

Don't get me wrong, this would taste good at any time of the year, but for me its warm, smooth and slightly spicy flavour are perfect on a cold evening when I want a change from whisky. Currently drinking it with Fever Tree naturally light Indian tonic and a slice of lime, lovely!

16th November 2015

Different and a cheap deal

Love this. It's beautifully well balanced with a very purfumy-spice flavour of cardamom, pepper and coriander. Whilst it makes for an interesting g&t I found my preferred mixer to be cranberry juice. It just seems to work really well and brings out the flavours of the gin. It's cheaper than a lot of premium brands as well which is a bonus.

5th September 2015

Tried this for the first time on Sat. Barman served over ice and wedges of orange studded with cloves. So so good. On my shopping list

30th August 2015

what a great gin but Adnams Copper House is even better

14th June 2015

Fabulous continued...

In response to my previous post named "fabulous" I meant to say fever tree tonic water.

13th March 2015

A great bottle of gin! Very easy to drink. I agrree with another review: it tastes beautiful even with cheap tonic water compared to other, less favourable brands of gin. To make it even better have with Ophir tonic water and of course with any G&T it needs to be ice cold.

13th March 2015

We drink it with bog standard tonic water and love it. This is Gin at another level!

7th March 2015

We've been serving it with apple juice and a lime/apple garnish.
It's incredibly popular; very distinctive peppery taste.

21st February 2015

An unusual and very distinctive take on gin. The spicing may be a little pronounced for some, but works very well with Fever Tree lemon tonic. I need to do some more experimenting re it's use in a Martini.

12th December 2014

The spice is right

Served with a slice of red chilli and a quality tonic (my choice is Fentiman's), this is a quality, refreshing drink and a welcome change in direction. x

26th July 2014

A Christmas Gin

I had it served with a stick of cinnamon and slice of orange. I immediately thought of Christmas and it's warm oriental spiciness enhanced that thought. A must for my stocking this Yule.

9th June 2014

This is a good, unusual gin. I had it in a bar and they served it with half a red chilli as a garnish. It is pretty spicy but still with that gin taste. Something different to try for sure
