Merywen Gin Bottling Note

Merywen Gin comes to us via the North Star Distillery, which opened in early 2016 in North Wales. Made with their tiny 30 litre still, Merywen Gin's botanicals include juniper (Merywen is actually the Welsh word for juniper!), gorse and heather. Very cool stuff.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Herbaceous. Drying, subtly peppery juniper sits at the core, with a touch of berry sweetness surrounding it.

Merywen Gin Reviews

Forgettable

A very ordinary gin, lacking in zap and personality. If you are after a Welsh gin, go for Aber Falls. Far better and much more accomplished.

Doesn't come any better

Lovely. Distinctive, no vices. Comes in different flavours, too. Nice even to sip without mixer.
Great folk music labels!

Gorgeous gin - buy it!

Honestly this is one of my favourite gins ever! It's really special, tastes better than almost any other I've tried - very gentle, never too much, but not without punch or statement. It's especially lovely with fever tree tonic and basil leaves in my opinion! The folk music on the label also is so much more than a gimic; the maker seems to really have a sense of history and understand the importance of traditional music and traditional professions (like making gin)! Buy this gin if you can! It won't disappoint!

Excellent small batch gin

I had a Merywen Pink Gin with fevertree tonic earlier this month at a festival and it was fantastic! Off to find myself a supplier of the Strawberry and Rose - or I’ll have to take another trip to Wales!

Yes please...

I tried this recently in our local ale house and was pleasantly surprised. It's got plenty of refreshing Juniper that mixes well with most tonics, and responds well to the citrus balance of a slice of lime or lemon - or grapefruit in my Wife's case. The sun's out and I'm thinking favourably of pouring one now... but it's only 11am!

Top stuff!

Goes particularly well with Fever Tree tonic. If you can get hold of one of the fruit specials they're delicious : )

My favourite gin!

I've bought many many bottles of this delicious gin over the last few years. I generally have over 30 bottles of different gins at home, but this one I return to again and again. I drink it with a light tonic, a sprig of fresh rosemary and loads of ice. I've introduced friends to it and persuaded restaurants locally to stock it and they've been very happy with it too.

Excellent

A beautiful gin, we made up a jug with elderflower tonic and pink grapefruit with plenty of ice on a really hot afternoon, it was delicious. A really lovely afternoon.

Much better gins out there

Not impressed. Lacks punch and flavour and is massively overpriced. The musical theme on the bottle is a bit of a gimmick and doesn’t divert from the mediocre quality of the product. Avoid it. There are much better gins out there.

Get your lemon out!

Tasted dull and very un refined, it did make an OK G&T but I had to heap in the lemon and drown it with tonic. Overall very disappointed as we'd bought this on the recommendation of a friend.

Lacks interesting taste.

This gin really doesn't offer much of anything, it really needs to be dressed up with garnishes and mixers. A little bit astringent for my liking.

For goodness sake, buy this gin! It'll be a gem.

This gin is superb. I first purchased it in Anglesey whilst on holiday to while away with the beautiful sunsets. It tastes great with a dash of fresh lime & soda, with a traditional tonic or if u fancy some thing a little different, ice with cranberry & lime. Too many 'gin bars' popping up with 'plastic' flavoured products: this gin restores your faith in the craft.

Stunning, smooth and gently complex.

Stunning, smooth on the palate and nose, haven't experienced a Gin quite like this before. Gentle and complex neat, with a splash of Franklin's and sons tonics and orange zest it really opens up. As it's made with absolutely no citrus (we don't grow many citrus trees on the mountains around here) the zest adds a familiar element, but is by no means required to enjoy this gin.
It's not as punchy as a London dry usually is, but as one to start with on a clean palate, I wouldn't recommend any above it.
As a side note, if your lucky enough to get your hands on any of the seasonal limited editions, or the new release vodka, you will not be disappointed.

Great find, superb smooth taste 10 out of 10.

Hi,
First time purchase on Angelsey from The Cook Shop (two bottles) one of the best gins. My friends are always lookong for a new gin, just to outdo each other, however, l think this gin is a real find. Unfortunately, the nearest stockest to us is Bala, we live in Shropshire. Hope we can buy on line direct.

A truly musical gin - great stuff!

Bought a bottle from a local supplier in North Wales after a rather special experience the other Friday evening - when Virgin Trains had set up a special tasting session on the journey from Euston. Memorable! Best railway journey ever!!
Have thoroughly enjoyed extending the experience ...........
Merywen is very soft and smooth with a gentle aroma and is perfectly drinkable on its own. Though I have to say, I prefer gins with an accompaniment.
That said, the makers do provide original music on the bottle so one can soon reach for a suitable instrument to provide a rather different accompaniment.
Full marks to Northstar for this approach and full marks for the gin itself!
Will I be having more? Most definitely ...............

A rather pedestrian gin

Bought a bottle at the Bodnant Welsh Food Centre. Was frankly underwhelmed. The style is pedestrian and rather flat, lacking the punch and full-on alcoholic impact that makes a great gin. Boringly combined botanicals. Not especially good in a G&T. Would not repeat the purchase.

Full of flavour while remaining smooth and balanced

Very nice indeed. Lovely full peppery juniper flavour that is rich, deep but remians smooth and balanced. Love it.

Stupendous.

Best gin I've ever tasted. It's got a really delicate flavour, and as a musician it's really good fun to have a contemporary Welsh tune on the back of each bottle! I've bought some as gifts for my friends and they're all converts. Glad to see it's now available online!

Subtle, versatile, enjoyable tipple!

I tried this gin for the first time earlier this year. The botanicals are perfectly subtle which help to make this a very versatile, enjoyable tipple! I tried this with a number of different tonic waters and garnishes but particularly enjoyed mixing it with the Fever Tree elderflower tonic.

Quirky, delicious neat and like nothing else.

This gin is so different to anything else out there at the moment, just a wiff of it and you'll know what I mean! At 40% proof, it is surprisingly smooth, and it's rather nice just neat over lots of ice. Another combination which I recently discovered is red grapefruit with elderflower tonic, delicious! I really like the little touches on the bottle too, every bottle is numbered and contains the batch number as well.
