Aalborg Taffel is a classic Aquavit, released in 1846. It has a lovely caraway, citrus flavour, and was heralded as Best Aquavit in the World at the 2002 International Wine and Spirit Competition.

This is the Ardbeg 10 of snaps/akvavit! There might be better ones around (e.g. the Christmas version of this); but in Denmark, it used to be the standard. I have tasted a number of Swedish, Norwegian and Icelandic products, and while usually fine, they have all been quite weak. Served at room temperature. (Those that claim it should be cold just do not like snaps - drink vodka instead). Strong but rounded taste of mainly caraway (but also other herbs). Goes very well with "open faced sandwich" (smørrebrød).
Beautiful. Keep bottle in Freezer, as it will not freeze, but it enhances the taste. First time tasting ? Then do this: Breathe in, then empty the small nip glass. Then breathe out. Then you will never choke on the fumes. This has been written by a once upon a time Dane, who was brought up with this. Never have any hangover with it, and it makes you happy. that is why it is called Water of Life. Skaal.
Good, very clean, mellow and refreshing Akvavit. Citrus and caraway. Some dill? Drink as schapps or combined with smoked and/or pickled or cured fish (herring, salmon, mackrel), smoked pork dishes, cold meat cuts etc. In my opinion Aalborg is best served chilled, but not freezer cold. Very nice!
30+ years ago our family drank the clear Aalborg Aquavit in the green bottle with red label. Can't find that one any more...for a while there was a clear aquavit in a clear bottle with a red/white label, but that is impossible to find too. How does this compare? Anybody know...?
When asked my secret of living to 96 I say Aalborg Akvavit. I remember my Norwegian Grandfather bringing it of of the "ice box" (pre freezer days) and serving shots to the adults. Then one day I was at a bar and the bartender said "I want you to try something new" (to United States) and he pushed a shot over to me and I was hooked. a
