When asked my secret of living to 96 I say Aalborg Akvavit. I remember my Norwegian Grandfather bringing it of of the "ice box" (pre freezer days) and serving shots to the adults. Then one day I was at a bar and the bartender said "I want you to try something new" (to United States) and he pushed a shot over to me and I was hooked.a

family favourite, i remember my grandfathers allday 60th birthday celebration in Odense, each of the 7 courses was interspersed with a round of akvavit.

Known to most adult danes (over 30) as ´Red Aalborg´and you dont have to eat Herring with this... try gorgonzola on bread with an egg yolk, shrimp with mayo and lemon. One thing that always suits a glas of ´red Aalborg´is cold beer :-)By the way, serve it from the fridge - Not the freezer.

This is the real stuff, not rebottled in the US. As others have said, store it in the freezer.

Tried this on a cruise 1 september 2012 on the Baltic. Found it very relaxing and very stimulating. I bought 2 bottles of taffel when in aalborg, but take care as it can creep up on you.

First tasted this in Sweden in 1965 with herring marinated by a local Grandmother. Wonderful. We use it as a special treat with Scottish marinated sweet herring. Put Akvavitt in freezer in advance and have thimblefuls with each mouthful. Sometimes (helangore?) "all at once".
