With a name like Gigondas, you expect wine from this part of France to be gigantic. But while they are not short of alcohol and fruit, from producers like Domaine les Pallieres, the wines can be surprisingly perfumed and elegant. This is made from 80% grenache with the rest made up of syrah, cinsault and clairette. Fermentation is with wild yeasts and take place over about 30 days in concrete tanks and wooden vats before ageing in old oak casks. This is drinking superbly now but will improve over the next 10-15 years. Serve with some hearty food.
Floral nose, ripe red fruit and rosemary - really fresh and gorgeous smelling. So vibrant on the palate, pure and long with a little nuttiness on the finish.
