Unavailable for 7 years even in Japan, age statement Yoichi has made an exciting return (in sadly small quantaties at this stage) to these shores! The jewel in Nikka's crown, this is traditionally made, well crafted Japanese single malt (direct-fired stills, worm tubs, proprietary yeasts, wooden washbacks) with real clarity, and notes of vanilla, fruit, some peat smoke, and a salty edge.
Plenty of fruit notes - peach stands out in particular, ripe, vibrant and subtly floral. Then there's rich vanilla custard, peat smoke and a hint of nutmeg spice.
Oily and sweet, with peat smoke following swiftly afterwards. Light oak and developing fruit notes beneath.
Appealing oak lasts on the finish.
Excellent thank you
Nose: good and balanced fruit notes, with peach and sherry. Palate: sweet, but the peat smoke comes too strong at the first taste Finish: looong everlasting finish with oak and light peat smoke. I'm sure I have to find the good way to taste it, maybe with the add of a little bit of water to let the fruit notes come out at first. If you are searching for a sweet, everyday whiskey I won't reccomend it, it's not really complex and it's not either a easy-taste whiskey. Good score after all
I do agree with the official MoM tasting notes, I'd add I even feel some sherry in this one but I'm not sure if there's any Sherry finish in this one or not. Very oily body, fruity and gently peated.. If like me, you are looking for a sweet (even sherried) and mildly to gently peated whisky, search no more and grab this one. It's costly, but it's really wonderful and pretty much on its own compared to other scotch whiskies -that, by the way, I like too- but that are now going to be compared and evaluated after this Yoichi 10yo.
I'd been told Japanese Whiskys were good, so i grabbed a bottle of this some time back, without ever having heard of Yoichi or Nikka. I remember being dissapointed it had a screw cap as opposed to a cork. It felt a little cheap, although clearly good quality, and at 10 years i really wasn't expecting much. It's now my go-to Whisky, and the Whisky i judge all others by. I love the powerful taste and long, long finish. None of my 21 or 18 year olds come close to this. Screw the dodgy cap i love it. Looking forward to trying Yoichi 15, and Yamazaki 18.
I bought a sample of my first Japanese whiskey. Loved it---will get a bottle. Smooth, a tiny bit smoky, and a bit sweet
