Do you love whiskies that pack a big ol' blast of smoky brilliance? Then Peat Bomb is a single malt that's well worth a look! This expression is an 8 year old single malt from an undisclosed distillery on the isle of Islay, and as the name suggests, it's mightily peaty indeed. Earthy smoke, bonfire embers, simmering spice – it's all there and more.
Oatcakes, smoky bacon crisps, baked earth, cracked black pepper, with a whisper of caramelised nuts underneath.
Brown sugar, nutmeg, roast chestnuts, cask char, loads of phenolic notes drifting in.
Savoury oak with singed barley and sea salt crisps.
A Peat Bomb by name and by nature.
Alright, ‘almost overwhelmingly smoky’ is going a bit far. But this is satisfyingly smoky with - as the rear label says - balance. The smoke isn’t as aggressive on the nose as you’d expect from the name, but it’s right there. Moving on, a balancing richness comes through. You can pick up a bit of chocolate and even some toasted coconut. The peat lingers on the finish, but again with a balancing richness, especially dark chocolate.
So considering the name, this needs to deliver big and complex peaty flavour throughout. It smells ok and starts well with a distinct smokey peaty taste pleasant but fairly mild, that sadly just drops off to a watery aftertaste with no complexity whatsoever.
Obviously not a long matured malt but the peat and iodine are there up front and the taste is remarkably smooth for such a young malt. My neighbour loved his bottle and although I’m not a huge fan of peaty malts I found it very agreeable and smooth. At offer price it is great value. Recommended
I get a bit of peat smoke, but found this to be thin and watery. Would have been better bottled at a higher ABV, perhaps, but found this to be an inoffensive damp squib rather than the expected peat bomb.
Absolutely disappointing ! It does not even nose palate or finish as a one year matured whisky - probably not seen the inside of a cask !
