    Single Malt

    Waterford The Cuvée

A fantastic single malt Irish whisky from the Waterford Distillery, following on from its Single Farm Origin series, with further influence from the chateaux of France. The Cuvée brings together spirits from its Single Farm Origin series, allowing for the distillers to create a complex, layered, delicious expression. Immensely impressive stuff as ever from Waterford.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Earthy barley with hint of freshly baked bread and melting butter. Cooked orchard fruit, vanilla blossom, and lemon zest.

    Palate

More citrus, now slightly sweeter with grapefruit and orange. Honeyed cereals, caraway, and a subtle savoury hint of olive.

    Finish

Oily barley lingers on the finish.

    Wonderfully crafted dram

The nose is inviting, with notes of honey, orchard fruits, and a subtle earthiness. On the palate, layers of spice, malt, and citrus come together beautifully. The finish is long and warm, with a touch of oak and a whisper of cocoa. While the depth and character are impressive, it just misses the fifth star for me due to its slightly bold price point compared to similarly rich offerings. Nonetheless, this is an exceptional whiskey worth savouring for anyone who enjoys terroir-driven spirits.

    Overwhelming sulphur taste and smell

Found it has an overwhelming sulphur smell and taste. I was looking forward to this after seeing all that goes into making whiskey at Waterford but was sadly let down.

    Fantastic, high value session dram

Fantastic, high value session dram. Complex, chewy and fragrant - probably my favourite Waterford to date.

    A little sweet and sour

Light apple juice in colour, the overwhelming smell on first nosing is a yeasty bread like cookie dough smell. This combines with a lemon vanilla sensation, like lemon meringue pie - zesty but sweet. If you really get your nose in it tingles like sherbet. Very fresh in the mouth, the citrus amplifies with the vanilla, making for a sweet and sour sensation. It's not especially spicy, but there is a sour candy type experience which makes your mouth curl up a bit. The finish is a little unpleasant, that sourness remains with a little honey and the yeast taste.
