One of the first releases from the Waterford Distillery's Single Farm Origin series - behold, Bannow Island 1.1! This single malt Irish whisky (they don't spell it with the 'e') was distilled using a single vintage of Overture barley grown on the south coast of Co. Wexford by Ed Harpur on his Bannow Island farm (fun fact: Bannow Island isn't an island - it once was, but not anymore). Surrounded by the sea and grown on sandy soil, this is an excellent exploration of barley's terroir in relation to whisky. The spirit was aged in a combo of French and American oak casks, and bottled at 50% ABV with no chill-filtration or additional colouring.
Soft lemon, Crunchie bars, fresh barley with a hint of vanilla blossom to it.
Citrus once again, but it soon makes way for granola with chocolate chips, summer berry tart with cream, sultana and peppercorn.
Mellow oak lingers on the finish, plus honeydew melon and leafy mint.
Very much enjoyed this whiskey, so smooth with a sort of vanilla, chocolate finish that just pleasantly lingered.
