Originally launched for the travel retail market, this 12 year old Irish blend is full of sweetness and sublimely smooth.
Scones with clotted cream and vinous strawberry jam, sultanas, dates and digestive biscuits. Linseed and honey.
Light and soft with hints of gentle spices (nutmeg, allspice), a touch of honey and creamy fruits in yoghurt.
Medium length with a little oaky/nutty bittersweetness.
A blend of malt whiskey, pot still whiskey and grain whiskey matured in bourbon and Sherry casks, all of which is evident here.
You can taste many flavours - sweet, fruity, creamy, nutty etc. A great irish whiskey. Very well priced here in Australia.
Step away from the inland woods and move to the coast. A woodsy spray of saltwater hits the nose, but is quickly covered up by a blanket of middling sweetness that teases you with a single spicy nut. I want a handful of that spice, but instead I get sweet fruits muted by a creamy mouthfeel. After the sip it lingers with a tingle and more sweetness. A good transitional Irish Whiskey for people who want to branch out from the big island to the little, but not really my thing.
I've been working my way through the whisky advent calendar and this is the first time I've felt moved to review a dram. For me this has everything that is great about Irish whiskey. Its smooth, friendly mouth feel allows the homely notes of leather, liquorice and oak to wrap you in a warm blanket. Just the thing for a cold and windy December night.
Nose: A light a fresh nose of fruit candy, Tropical fruit, pine, lemon and lime, some dark berries, grain, a hint of bread dough, a touch of Olive oil, some grassy notes and a little spice. Palate: Clean on the palate with notes of, malt, citrus zest, a little cream, some spice, almonds, breakfast cereal and green apple. Finish: A medium length finish with notes of fruit, a little citrus oil, and mild oak .
The nose includes marzipan and honey, and the fruit element I get is pear. The palate is light and surprisingly creamy, with cinnamon, nutmeg, raisin, and sherry. It finishes with toffee sweetness laced with almonds and wood, including a slight salty, umami character, like Thai fish sauce. This unusual finish makes the drink very moorish, especially as the flavours do not last long. I drank this down a little more quickly than usual, which must be a good sign.
