The word tarn comes from the old Norse word tjorn meaning pond, and is used in the Cairngorms to describe the small mountain spring water lochs, some of which have existed for over 10,000 years, forming in the last ice age. Many of these are surrounded by peat, producing ancient sweet and earthy flavour bricks that inspired the profile of this expression from Tomintoul. Which handily comes in a one-litre bottle so there's more to enjoy.

I tried this with a friend who bought the bottle, while the fruit of a traditional Tomintoul is there, this is more angry, with smoke and charred fruit notes. On the palate it is more a sweet earthy peat with peppery fruit. Let’s be honest it could do with the ABV bumped a bit, but it doesn't suffer for being 40% & when priced down to a 700ml bottle is still good value. This could be a regular peaty sipper or for those who want to move the next step up from barely there smoke & peat whisky.
