Tomatin Legacy Bottling Note

Tomatin distillery's new no-age-statement release uses virgin oak as well as bourbon casks. It provides a new entry level to the Tomatin range but the use of different casks make this a unique expression.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Lemon, panatella and pine forest. Slightly green with vanilla.

Palate: Cracked pepper and sweet barley with pineapple cube sweets. Waves of warming oak beneath.

Finish: Sweet but peppered.

Overall: A clean and certainly affordable single malt whisky.

Tomatin Legacy Reviews

Affordable? This is higher than the 12 year old?

Better then the glenlivet founders reserve

Sweet, mellow young but in a good way. Needed the 43abv, any less it would miss oomph which it certainly needs. Lots of vanilla and honey. Much better then the glenlivet founders reserve crap!

Reminds me more of a tequila

Very young and spirity. Some nice lemon, honey, and toffee notes. Maybe it will improve over time. For the price, I can't complain.

Pleasure to drink , warming , nice nose too

Well worth the money , tried whiskies far more expensive ( I mean £100 per measure ) than this and have tasted far worse .

Not for me

Did nothing for me at all. Quite harsh on the throat. Sometimes cheap is just a waste of money.

Very nice summer dram

The virgin oak adds something fresh and unique, lovely stuff!

Please try to make a old fashioned! It's mind blowing chocolaty!

Low price & perfect for old fashioned.
Chocolate flavor blossoms after adding orange oil. True delight.

Not a legacy to stand on...

A clean citrus nose, let down by an unfortunate paraffin note at the crest of the palette before the pepper and sweetness returns. Taking a risk with the Tomatin reputation with this release - but not a huge one at that. Others have done a lot worse (Glenlivet Founders Reserve, Laphroaig Select etc)

Good for the price.

It's a known fact that water brings out flavours in a whisky when needed. Especially those that are high abv or a little closed. The foremost whisky tasters in the world all use drops or teaspoons of water to lower abv and bring out flavours. Maybe do some research before criticisizing others.

This is a pretty good little whisky for the price. Yes, its young. But the fresh, crisp flavours are there (especially with a few drops of water and 15 minutes rest). For the price, this is a damn good whisky.

Love it ......

Sorry but malt whisky dosen't water just a good palate...... what's the point of having a good fire just to put the flame out with water.... enjoy the malt.. dont kill it.......

Don't know where the bad reviews are coming from. I tried this as day 16 of my Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar and thought it to be quite good. Does it taste young? Yes it does, but not in a bad way. It is not rough or harsh, but it is mellow and flavorful. I was surprised to see that this is only $27 US. I had this pegged for a $45-50 for sure. Don't believe the naysayers. Try it for yourself. You'll be glad you did.

Great scotch!

It's decent

Ok guys, take this with a cup of salt, because I am bad at whiskey reviews, but I've had my share of good whiskeys, so I can compare.
I have read all of the reviews before me before buying tomatin legacy. Honestly, I don't know where are the bad ones coming from..
Without a doubt I can say that I like tomatin 12 very much in the "cheap" whisky department, it never disappoints. It is mellow, smooth, with a tiny little bit of smoke on the nose.
Legacy could be compared to tomatin 12 directly. For me they are very similar, except legacy has more oomph (but it's understandable, it is younger), also it has a more noticeable smoky flavors (on the nose and on the palate).
Bottom line is, if you are familiar with tomatin 12 and don't know if you should try legacy: TRY IT. They are similar enough to not dissapoint you, just with a little bit of new details :)
I hope this helped.

Needs a bit of oomph.......!

Very disappointing. Obviously very young, needs more of everything! I'm amazed that they thought this was good enough to release as their entry level malt. Don't waste your money.

Cheap and cheerful but nothing special.

Stopped by the Tomatin distillery on my way up to Inverness and tried most of their current range. I would strongly recommend stretching to the 12 year old as it is a better balanced and fuller dram than the rather immature, thin and fiery Legacy.

This Beer Blog:

The colour is rich and light amber like in appearance and when rolled around the glass is a little syrupy.

The nose has aromas of lemon and almost pine notes Vanilla and caramel notes with an airy freshness in the background.

The flavour is light and delicate with a peppery sweetness which has with hints of pine. Boiled lemon sweets, pineapple and crunchy green apples Warming with pine notes again

The finish is clean light and refreshing with notes of cracked pepper coming back.

Received it as a gift

I was so disappointed after trying this one. A young, hot, thin dram without much flavor. Tomatin cashing in, perhaps. I took it to a friend's party and left it there.

19th June 2015

Whiskey as it should be!

Seeing a bottle of single malt for this price got me in a bit of a skeptic mood, especially as I'd gotten used to good blended whiskeys that don't cost much less, but it was cheap enough and nice-looking enough so I went for it.
Never made a better choice about alcohol, ever! Smooth tasting and sweet to the nose with a hint of grassiness and oak. Gives a bit of a burning sensation in the nose and eyes on first sniff, but smooooooth and delicious - you'll be drinking more drams than you might be used to!

9th March 2015

Tastes like young whisky

if you're used to 12-year old whiskys like Bunnahabhain or Glenfarclas this tastes like cheap undermatured malt. You can buy Teachers and get better value

19th January 2015

How lovely

You really get the Virgin oak here, it gives the whole escapade a sense of fun and Joie de vivre. I like my single malts to be one of two things, exceptional examples of the class or experimental. This is both. Very well done.

9th January 2015

Oh dear me..... Single malt at $18.90 a bottle dancing*****

****on my tastebuds like this..... Even as I read the back of the bottle describing Aroma: Vanilla pods, marshmallow, sponge cake, fresh pineapple, mixed with citrus lemon and boiled sweets. Palate: Light and delicate with a candy sweetness which is peppered with hints of pine, Lemon sherbet, pineapple and crunchy green apples. Finish: Clean, light and refreshing.
***What really was so supernatural about this haunting spirit is that as one takes a sip while reading these words------you can taste the experience and read along in English Language as to the beautiful experience.... Delicious and wow are words that come to mind and look forward to another one as a treat sometime soon.......From West Central Wisconsin to you Scot Blokes responsible for this masterpiece----------------GREAT JOB!!!!!

Extremely nice and mellow

Very smooth and light on the palate. Clean finish. Can't be beat at the same cost.

27th September 2014

Great scotch!

Agree with "Tomatin Legacy, what can I say" who is right on. I paid $22 for this whisky - tremendous value! I feel there is some younger whisky present but it's very well hid. It's a sweet, creamy scotch with flavors of vanilla and wood but augmented with pine notes and surprisingly, deeper flavors especially in the finish. Indeed, molasses is present, and you don't usually find that in cheaper whiskies. Hats off to Tomatin on this one. Virgin oak well played.

Tomatin Legacy, what can I say

For a whiskey that is ageless in label this really is something sublime, I only bought it out of impulse mainly due to the price it was offered at and the stunning box catching my eye and I have to say what a buy at £20.00, its very drinkable with a deep woody flavour and the bourbon cask with a treacly texture afterwards, it does have a pine like essence on the nose but such a delicious colour not too far off butterscotch. Love the warming aftertones and how it sticks to the glass. Definitely one of the best low price nips to be had. Superb,
