This one keeps its secrets close. The Mystery Malt from the ever-playful Thompson Bros. is a single malt Scotch bottled in black glass – the contents hidden, the truth revealed only when you pull the capsule. Distillery, age, and origin? They’re all there, under a discreet sticker on the cork (and repeated on the glass, in case you get a bit cork-happy).
This is the first of a series. Each release is a spread of casks drawn from a wide range of distilleries – from young mavericks like Lochlea and Dornoch to heavy-hitting veterans like Clynelish, Caol Ila, and Inchgower. Some are barely out of their nappies at four years old, others are esteemed malts at 29 – but all are bottled at 48.5% and selected for balance, flavour, and sheer surprise.
If you want to spoil the surprise, you can see the full breakdown below.
The nose offers a lively dance between citrus oil, honeyed oats, and waxy apple peel, with deeper notes of heather, coastal salinity, and toasted hazelnuts.
On the palate, a silky arrival of vanilla cream and spiced malt leads into baked orchard fruits, a gentle thread of bonfire smoke, and soft herbal notes – think chamomile and mint tea.
The finish is clean but complex, with lingering oak tannin, lemon peel, and a warming touch of peppery peat.
