The third instalment of Mystery Malt from Thompson Bros. continues the tradition of intrigue and surprise. Just like the earlier releases, the whisky comes in opaque black glass, keeping its secrets locked away until the lid is lifted and the discreet sticker on the cork is peeled back. Only then is the full truth revealed.
And what a truth it is. This edition is a sprawling tapestry of Scotland’s whisky landscape, stitched together from no fewer than 23 distilleries. A whisper of Islay at 33 years old sits alongside venerable Speyside malts in their mid-to-late twenties, while younger powerhouses bring vibrancy and texture. It’s a wild mix of refill hogsheads, oloroso and sherry-seasoned casks, bourbon barrels, port, and even Dutch virgin oak – all bottled at 48.5% ABV.
Sweet orchard fruit and barley sugar, layered with waxy citrus, polished oak, and a flicker of coastal smoke.
Rich and complex, with honeyed malt, apricot jam, vanilla cream, and bursts of dried fruit from sherry and port. Spice builds steadily, alongside hints of sea breeze and gentle peat.
Long and evolving, balancing sweet fruit, oaky depth, and a final savoury edge of smoke and spice.
