The Sexton Single Malt Bottling Note

The creation of master blender Alex Thomas, The Sexton Single Malt Irish whiskey is made from 100% Irish malted barley, triple distilled in copper pot stills. After, the liquid is aged in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks imparting a rich and fruity character. It comes in a rather eye-catching hexagonal bottle, too.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Rich aromas of nuts, marzipan and dark chocolate with a pinch of spice.

Palate: Dried fruit followed by honeycomb sweetness, apricots, lemon zest, prunes and oak spice.

Finish: Woody on the finish, with honeyed sweetness coming through.

Sexton Single Malt Reviews

What Bushmills Black Bush Tried to Copy - for $10 less!

Add a drop of water and it's a smoother Black Bush. For $30 instead of $40. The pictures on the site have it poured over ice so it needs that drop of water. But it also is very mellow and perfect for mixed drinks as well. Bushmills blends get weak fast when mixed in something, and this doesn't. The better Bushmills, well, they are $45-60 a bottle and honestly not really much better.

Bushmills is obviously trying to copy her work with their newer products, but she took her secrets with her when she left the company. :)

Heaven on earth!!

Had not heard of this until I was presented with it as a gift. Very smooth and loved the traces of vanilla/honeycomb in the palate. Can taste the rich fruit base, slight spicy hint and the sherry cask finishing. I was surprised and delighted by this offering and will most definitely add it to my Christmas wish list.

Excellent Value

Terrific Whiskey! Exceptional value. I think it’s a good as Scotch that’s twice the price.

I expected allot of averages from this whisky. But was I in for a shock. Very smooth, even with the rounded slight spice I get from Irish whiskies. Has hints of cream and caramel to finish off the taste. I’ve bought whiskies easily twice the price and not been as impressed.

Value for money.

Bought this for a friend who is a whiskey connoisseur. He said it was very smooth and was really pleased with it.

Worth it

Good little number, you can talk all the talk you want! Pleasant on the nose & tongue..... leaves a cracking after taste that lingers like smoked caramel! For the price you’d be stupid not to!

Great whisky. A bugger to pour!

I can’t think where the negative reviews come from on this one. It’s lovely. For the price it tastes like something more expensive. Tonnes of fruit on the nose, especially apple. Lovely smooth taste that you would expect from one finished in sherry casks. Worst thing about it is the neck of the bottle. I love the quirky bottle, but it’s impossible to pour without dribbling it everywhere.

Nothing special

Nothing special. Many whiskies available at £20-ish are just as good.

Amazing value for the money

We've had this at our store for a while now and I've always overlooked it. I guess it just looked too gimmicky or seemed too cheap for a single malt but I'm running out of Irish whiskey's to try so let's give this a try. Upon opening I was astounded at how good it smelled, not fumey at all, just rich sherrywood, dark fruits, and vanilla beans. The palate is just as good as the nose , classic sherried whiskey so much dark fruit, deep oaky- ness, sweet high grade tobacco, figs, dates, and a little bit of that copper pot still barley taste to let you know it's from Ireland. Amazing value dram this, I'd say this is as good as a lot of Scottish single malts and about half the price. If you're looking for an Irish whiskey to pair with a cigar that won't break the bank this is it! Cheers! The Sugarbear

I love my single malts, and sexton is one of the smooth, silky taste which I enjoyed drinking with ice and Highland still water..

Very good Chill out and relax whiskey.

After your shot, "sipping" stick your nose in your glass, Mmmm..
All those after scents lingering in there, Definitely aged in Sherrie casks, slight "very slight" hint of the copper cauldron. Slight tick of vinialla, oak, no char flavor...very smooth. Not for slamming shots! This stuff is a take your time drink. Grab your favorite cigar, a good hoppy brew, build a fire in the backyard fire pit, and park and enjoy this single malt. I did.

Mixed emotions

Delicious, love the rich honey fullness and big hug taste; but the old man (for whom it was bought for Father's Day) is a little disappointed...he wanted more depth and complexity. No fire, says he. Hey ho. Very pleased to receive it as a gift, all the same.

The best way to spend an evening ,chatting with my father, enjoying the warmth and mellow smoothness of sextons

Disappointing... Smells fantastic but unfortunately it's harsh and quite plain. There is slight depth and woody after taste but not the best whiskey and not the worst.

I've been enjoying Irish Whiskeys recently (Tulamore Dew and Teelings) and thought I'd give this a try. Its fine for the price but nothing exceptional.

18th May 2020

Worth it

Smell of honey, vanilla, apples, sweet ripe fruit, oaky spice. Taste of vanilla, apple peel, cherry, bitter wood. Long honey oak dry aftertaste

I'm a scotch drinke who just converted. My friends are having a "scotch tasting" evening next week and I'm slipping in a bottle of Sexton just to see their reaction. I'll keep you posted :-)

I’ve had the pleasure of having had around 6 bottles in the last 6 months. For the price there is no better!

Surprisingly smooth and utterly unique

I bought this whiskey for a neighbours 85th birthday recently; he's a lover of Irish whiskey whereas i've always gone for the Scotch. I have to say it has a unique taste, different to any other whiskey i've ever tried. That isn't a bad thing at all but i was very surprised. The more we drank, the more i started to enjoy it!!

I'm a Highland fan, i like christmas cake, toffee, almond, vanilla; rich, warm, flavours and this isn't too far off of those notes. There are quite a few levels going on here, warming toasted nuts, certainly vanilla, and a longer finish with fudge, hints of coffee perhaps, then i expected.

For the price this really is a fantastic and unique whiskey. You may say it lacks finesse but it makes up for that with something unexpected, in a good way. I will certainly be buying myself a bottle soon. who knows, maybe my preference for Scotch over Irish is on the wain...

Dark and sweet a real treat

Having got this whiskey as a Christmas gift, along with several others, I decided the sexton was the one I would try first as I had never seen it before, the bottle itself caught my attention, making me think this is an odd one...
On pouring my first dram, I was surprised how dark it was for a single malt, and letting my nose pick up the sherry notes from the cask I swirled it around my pallet, the flavours are dark and sweet, and I picked up the chocolate and nuts and a hint of sherry, very pleasant for a whiskey of this price, I would buy another bottle to share with friends 👍

I was really surprised at how good this tastes.

The first time I had heard of The Sexton, I was telling the lady at the liquor store that I don't like smooth whiskey, I like the stuff that burns, and hits you, and makes you want to spike the shot glass like a football and punch the person next to you.

So she said "You need to try Sexton, that's done in copper pots and it's like hell fire going down".

SOLD! I got home, and opened the bottle expecting a smoke skull to waft out of the bottle and laugh at me for digging my own grave... but it didn't happen... I sniffed it... "this smells pretty good actually" I thought.

I poured a shot, and slurped in enough to get a taste, but not so much that I might die... "This is actually really good." And not in a "this whiskey just punched my liver right out my butthole" good... like this is my new go-to Irish whiskey good. Move over Jameson, you've been replaced.

24th February 2020

Try it mates

Smooth silky smoked flavour with a hint of malt.

18th February 2020

Gag in a bottle

This whiskey leaves a lingering taste that is rather unpleasant, the first swig will make you gag for dear life

16th February 2020

Firewater !

12th February 2020

smooth yet spicy.

Very Nice this for very little outlay. Stone cold bargain..
Sherry, dried fruit, spices... decent finish, if shortish... i could make a hole in the bottle quite easily..

for money a 4 star whiskey, not bad for irish... quite smooth

24th January 2020

If you enjoy a sherry oaked dram you'll enjoy this. The tasting notes are spot on. Open with a tiny splash of water.

25th December 2019

Not bad at all

Got a bottle at an absolute bargain. £23. Not bad at all. Definitely reminiscent of bushmills which is heavily rumoured to be what this drop actually is. Loads of honey sweetness, bags of sherry on the finish and surprisingly complex for a whiskey with no age statement. Supposedly 4 years. I would drink on the regular at this price. Great stuff.

21st December 2019

A satisfying dram without a doubt!

This is a good (perhaps a little more than good) whisky for the price. It has a beautiful nose. I am not sure what a couple reviewers on here were smoking .. perhaps they dont understand whisky. The nose, especially when you dive into it and concentrate, is almost captivating. Most people dont understand whisky and just copy the things other people say, and/or try to play "connoisseur" with the tasting and nosing. This whisky has a very nice nose.

The arrival is a bit mysterious. You dont really know what to expect, it can go either way, fortunately it goes the right way, the way of build up into a beautiful big malty explosion of flavour in the mid palette.

The palette is rich in the mid, though kinda falls on the finish so you're reminded that you are indeed getting what you pay for ... in the finish. I love how people buy budget whiskies then review it as if it should be a high end whisky.

The finish is adequate, but does not live up to the brilliant explosion of malt and fruit and spice in the mid palette.

All in all, you are getting a great bank for buck with a very enjoyable Irish SINGLE MALT .. which, mind you, is a great .. if not ideal.. starter to a flight.

16th November 2019

Need an everyday whiskey? This is it.

Think of an Irish spring nestled into the hills. Fresh, aromatic, calming...this is none of that. To the nose, it isn't much. To the palate though, it's extremely smooth and has a good balance of dry yet still sweet. It's a good whiskey to drink heavy.

8th June 2019

This has a very unpleasant nose much like a heavy spirit grain whiskey pretty nasty stuff

4th June 2019

Good easy drinking Irish

Honey on the nose along with the traditional Irish whiskey aroma. There is some nuttiness there too. Palate has a slight sweetness, again expected with an Irish, with more of the honey but also some orchard fruits. Silky smooth but with a lightly spicy finish
