The third batch of The Oxford Artisan Distillery's Rye Whisky once again makes deft use of the ancient heritage rye strains at its heart, along with wheat and even some oats and thistles. Initially, this one was aged in virgin American oak casks, but was then moved over to Moscatel de Setúbal wine casks all the way from Portugal. These casks have helped to impart a wealth of rich, ripe, decadent fruit notes, which works wonderfully with the core of rounded, subtly spicy notes from the spirit. Deeply impressive.
Wine-soaked dried fruit, liquorice, toasted cedar with a smidge of smoke, and a few vegetal flickers.
Honeydew melon, raspberry, white chocolate, dry oak, a familiar peppery heat lingering, plus smoke reappearing.
Vanilla, blackcurrant, soft rye, and apple.
