Yes, you read that right. This is an astounding, 71 year old Macallan single malt, released at part of the Speyside distillery's Red Collection. It spent its many moons (around 852 moons, if we're being somewhat specific) in sherry-seasoned European oak casks, and has been bottled up at 41.6% ABV. Astonishing, frankly.
A sweet and spicy opening with wood spices, soft ginger, nutmeg and orange peel moving into rich vanilla reminiscent of a crème brulee. There are underlying notes of honeydew melon and fig.
The sweet and spicy characteristics continue on the palate with a sweet ginger sponge moving into the creamy vanilla flavours of a baked custard tart. Finally moving into a combination of lapsang souchong and treacle tart.
A medium finish rich in wood smoke, peach and hazelnut.

We have been very lucky to recently celebrate the ease of lockdown by enjoying a bottle of Macallan 71 - red collection. What a sublime experience. On the nose, sweet orange and hints of vanilla/almond with tastes of nectarine and peach with smoke.
