The Macallan 18yo 1996

Another year, another greatly anticipated 18 year old Macallan single malt matured in Sherry casks from Jerez, Spain. This is the 1996 vintage and it's just as gorgeous as previous bottlings.

This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Soft, plump raisins, ginger snaps dusted with cinnamon and vanilla creaminess. Oak in the background.

Palate Stewed apples, again dusted with cinnamon. The oak from the nose develops. Clove and hints of orange peel.

Finish Lasting notes of toffee, raisin and that final hint of oak.

Overall A top-notch dram, rich and satisfying.

First sip, as good as the last
Full disclosure, this was my first bottle of Macallan 18, and I must say, I am loving it! I recently went to Spain and sampled the delicious Pedro Martinez 30 (as well as their more accessible XO) and let me tell you, the nose on this Scotch brought me back to Barcelona. With that said, the apricot/plum/raisin notes are intense, and the silky-heavy mouth feel is long lasting. My wife picked this up for me for Valentine's Day, and I couldn't be more pleased (with both her and the Macallan). I am generally a Balvenie guy (I like smoke and oak and a little maple/vanilla), but this Scotch is well worth the $$. Sip it and savor it. Drink it neat, and add a splash of water for the second pour. Well done Macallan! Thank You!

My Usual Dram - Well Worth the Price
Macallan 18 1996 sherry oak cask is the single malt I always come back to. Very flavorful, a gift to the nose, and a superb finish. The nose - heavy caramel tones. the palette - thick smokey, nutmeg, and fruits all rolled up into one. The finish is better than any - a thick nectar is left on your pallets that last seemingly forever. I normally drink it neat, but when a little water is added, the fruit flavors jump out at you. This one I normally save for me, and occasionally share with a good friend. It is definitely a sipping whiskey, that goes great with a good cigar.

Top of the line - my only 5 star rating
This is my favorite. Complex flavor - fruity, smoky, nutty and spicy all rolled up together. It is fantastic neat, and heavy enough to hold its flavor when water is added. The finish is my favorite part of drinking Macallan 18 is the finish. It leaves a coating of nectar on your palate that last and last. You can sip on a dram for a while. Well worth the price.

Sir Macallan
If you're at this review and wondering if you should pull the trigger, I think you should. This scotch is a classic. It's something that you can pour and always know that it will deliver. Whether you just ate a steak and want something to sip after dinner, or you're watching television on a random Wednesday, this whisky will be your friend for both. One suggestion I can give when drinking this whiskey is to pour a dram and then add 2-3 table spoons of ice cold water to it. It really brings out the subtle raisins and dampens the sherry note a bit so you can taste everything else. This is truly a gem, and 20 years from now this bottle will be worth $750, so if you don't drink it, don't be afraid to collect it. But drink it. No sense waiting 20 years when you can just have it now.

Don't Agree
The Macallan 18 Sherry needs to be treated slowly. Keep it in the glass for at least 10 Minutes because there is some harsh alcohol at the beginning. But then you get tender smells of everything that is described above. This is why I think it's the best (haven't jet had the chance to try the 25 Sherry).
Also the palate, don't expect something big, it's subtle, mellow and classi. For me a wonderful balance between dark fruit flavours and christmas spices, like a perfume for winter, if you know what I mean.
