The Macallan
Scotland
Single Malt
Another vintage of The Macallan's celebrated 18-year-old single malt, matured in the finest ex-sherry casks from Jerez. Tremendous single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed info and/or photos just get in touch!
Classic spiced dried fruits and creamy vanilla with orange peel, crystallised ginger and apple wood.
Rum and raisin, dates, caramel and cloves alongside custard and citrus hints. Rich and satisfying.
Spices and dried fruits from the palate remain alongside warming ginger and refined oakiness.
Classic stuff from The Macallan.
I finally tried the 18 last night and after warming my palate with a couple others poured a decent sample of the dram out. I nosed it for about five minutes, which was substantially better than the Macallan 10 (the only other one I've bought from them). I could nose it as aggressively as I wanted without any burning like the 10 year, though I prefer to use my German crystal champagne flutes when at home so the smell can circulate better without the nose being too close. The sherry notes were very recognizable, as well as the dried fruit tones. I finally allowed a small sample to slowly and softly saunter over my tongue, holding it in and around to get the mouth feel. While decent, I definitely like the Glengoyne 21's mouth feel more and perhaps even the Glenfiddich 15 (which I actually like a touch more than the 18), but I'll have to go back and compare. While the mouth feel was only decent, the finish made up for it. The dram came back up to my palate to linger and replace any burn with warmth, which surprised me as the 10 year's finish I find to be a bit rough, peppery with a burn not warmth. The finish lasts a decent amount, but still not as long as the Glengoyne 21s, which carries so long my partner and I find ourselves taking 10-15 minutes between sips of the delicious dram. She's actually had the Macallan 25 on numerous occasions and it has long been her favorite, but had to admit the Glengoyne 21 was comparable if not better than it. So considering the price of the Macallan and the Glengoyne, I'll be sticking with the Glengoyne 21 as its even cheaper than the Macallan 18 and substantially cheaper than the 25 ($120 online compared to about $800...no brainer). So while the Macallan is a great scotch, the Glengoyne is certainly "worth the wait" and the money
Very Good
One of my all time favorite from Macallan
Bought a bottle of this for a little treat to myself on my 22nd birthday, I need another bottle now, definitely the best whisky I have ever had the pleasure of sampling... And I've tried a fair few. Roll on payday!!!!!
I did not like it
