a really good first single malt

as a (formerly) deep south (u.s.) bourbon sipper, i moved on to the ryes (still my favorite whisk(e)y expression, but have returned to irish examples...which sparked an interest (again) in the wide world of scotch. i bought a bowmore years ago...too much smoke and peat at the time...loved the salty-sweet balance, but retreated to my rye. lately...back to watching 'ralfy' reviews etc. wanted to try scotch agaim--unpeated--if possible...couldn't find the two lowlands i was in search of (you probably know what i'm talking about...A & B!)...but decided to hit my local PLCB store here in pennsylvania...and there it was, day after christmas. the last bottle of Glenlivet 12! they had the 375 bottle but i went for that last 750 (and on sale! 36.99!). yes, this is SUBTLE...complexity is there...water added revealed more honey...but keep it totally NEAT. a really really perfect dram. sure, the 4 star status would quantum leap to 5+ stars if it had a little more complexity upfront...but i cannot complain. i almost bought the Glenfiddich, but glad to have started here. i know my rye/bourbon/uisce palate can progress 'faster' but just enjoying the mellowness of this classic scotch. the world just went HD ;) cheers and happy yule all

One of the finest and purest Whiskies on the market

Simple yet so complex. Glenlivet 12-year old was my first single-malt and has become my "every-day whisky". Some days I may treat myself to a 15 or 18 year old but on most evenings is a few ice cubes and a dram of Glenlivet for me!
