    The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve

First revealed towards the end of 2014, the Founder's Reserve single malt Scotch whisky is now available in the UK and will be replacing The Glenlivet 12 year old in many of the mature markets despite initial indications that it would sit beside it, broadening the entry-level options. Named in tribute to distillery founder George Smith, it's packaged in Georgian blue.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Some dates then what at first appears to be a touch of salinity, but is better described as a slightly sharp plum and apricot wine note. There's orange zest, toffee, hints of struck match and chocolate raisins, but before this starts to sound 'Sherried' there's also pear drops, a dusting of sweet cinnamon, honeysuckle and sweet pea.

    Palate

Fruity, then sweet, more toffee, a touch of anise, then into milk chocolate Flakes, banoffee pie and apple turnovers.

    Finish

Creamy toffee to the fore now, a little oak and sweet barley sugar warmth too. Milk chocolate raisins linger.

    Overall

Perhaps a little sweet, but it would work well with ice where the sweetness would be slightly suppressed - and before you shudder with disgust, Alan Winchester said that he liked his with a little ice sometimes too. And if it's good enough for the Master Distiller...

    Marketers' trick.

I'm a beginner in the Whiskey world. Anyway, I tested many blends and some 12 yrs malts. Recently, I decided to try the famous 12yrs Glenlivet for Christmas, I went to a local shop, bought the bottle and started the new taste experience. "What the .... ?" I thought after starting my first drum. I can't believe you all like this. I started reading a bottle... F##k! Glenlivet marketers caught me! They sold me this harsh drink almost for the price 12 yrs old whiskey. My Ballantine's is much better than this marketers' bottle. Bye Glen, I'll better buy fair taste for the fair price.

Not worth the time, trouble or money!

SWILL!!! Weak body, little flavor. Life is too short to drink cheap whisky. This was a gift, so I cannot return it. Will put it on the shelf and wait for someone I do not like to serve it to, and will from this point forward dring only Macallans 12 or better. I have a full year to plot my revenge against the person that gave it to me.

Not bad but 12 yo definitely better.

I am die hard fan of Glenlivet’s 12 yo and received the Founder’s reserve for Christmas. It has pleasant taste but it certainly does not compare to aged scotch. I loved the comment that clan McGregor was better. That’s my “go to” scotch when I’m low on funds. For a blended scotch it is not bad and more than half the price for a 1/2 gallon. Single malt is definitely where it’s at!

    It's okay

I am definitely a glenlivet fan, with that said my first glass was an 12yr and I was hooked. But typically go for the 12 yr. This Founders Reserve is okay. Not my favorite. Would rather have the 12yr but bought this because I figured I would love it. Unfortunately I was wrong I haven't put any ice in it or cut it yet. If the rumours are true and you are getting rid of the 12yr please don't the 12yr is so much better. If however you do replace it please, please replace it with something a little better than this.
