The Glasgow Distillery Co. isn't content with just making one style of whisky - oh heavens no! Behold, 1770 Peated! As you can probably figure out from the name, this is a peated expression, made specifically with heather-rich peat from the highlands. After distillation, the whisky was matured in new American white oak casks and allowed a finishing period of around a year in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks (whereas the unpeated 1770 Whisky is aged in bourbon casks before being finished in virgin oak).
Zesty orange and a hint of quince, juxtaposed by wafts of floral smoke.
Toasty oak and burnt sugar, with dried fruit richness building.
Slightly nutty on the finish, though earthy peat continues on and on.
Picked this up after hearing some good reviews and was not disappointed. It's a great peated whisky that packs a punch - will certainly be back for another bottle soon.
Lovely smoky whisky - sherry cask gives lovely richness and the peat gives lovely smokiness. One for any peated whisky fans out there, well done 1770!
Brilliant depth and complexity for such a new whisky - the combination of sherry casks and heavy peat is sublime!
Heavy peat and first-fill sherry casks were always going to be a winner, but that rich, oily spirit really ties the experience together. Fans of very old whisky aged in old, falling apart casks might not appreciate the liveliness of a slightly younger whisky aged in better casks, but the flavour is a definite winner!
Non Age statement but tastes like a fantastic 10/12 year old whisky. Very smooth and easy to drink yet complex. A fantastic whisky.
