The Deacon

The Deacon is a blended Scotch whisky brought to you by Sovereign Brands (the name behind hits like Bumbu Rum and Luc Belaire). Called The Deacon after its Scots meaning for an expert or master tradesperson, this whisky blends some well-crafted smoky Speyside and peated Islay whiskies, bringing you a beautifully balanced, smoky sipper that also works well in cocktails.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose A mixture of earthy and sweet smoke, with candied citrus.

Palate Balanced peat, with some spiced fruitcake, and more zesty orange.

Finish Smoky, with drizzles of caramel.

Reviews for The Deacon
Deacon whiskey
This is the worst whiskey I can remember drinking in almost 20 years!

The level of smoke was simply over powering, it tastes like I'm licking a charcoal at the bottom of a used bbq.

It lingers badly, it's a smooth as gravel and lingers like traffic on the m25 in rush hour.

Even coke couldn't save it. I will possibly just at a wee nip to make a smokey Joe in future but that's all that can be done with it.

Great bottle, terrible product

Good Value at reduced price
I managed to get a hold of ‘The Deacon’ on a Christmas Offer. At the price I paid I bought it just for the bottle. But it’s actually really nice and easy drinking. Not the Big Smoke you will get from an Ardbeg or similar but an easy drinking whisky that isn’t too complex yet still has some flavours and a nice hit of peat.

Och Aye !
Well what a surprise this was... saw the bottle and thought gimmick! But reading the description oboot blending speyside and Islay it quickly got my attention as a peat heed, so got hame tried it and Oh Yes! It's a delightful smoke bomb 😍

Pretty gross
Should've believed what the many reviews on the internet were saying. Basically this is form over function. The bottle is great but what's inside is indrinkable.

Delicious, different, refined smoke.
I'm a big fan of all things, peaty, smokey, islay etc. I do not think this is heavily smoked, as some reviews have said. Not compared to Laphroaig or port charlotte.

This is not a bad thing.

It is smoothe, delicious with a hint of smoke that's not over powering. It's not a complex or nuanced palate, but it is smoothe and delicious. The finish gently glides in a warm hint of smoke, that fades too soon but complements the palate well. For those who like a hint of refined smoke.

You are paying for the bottle
Thin, meh, to be expected.
These fancy bottles never have anything worth it inside.

Sweet Jane
I bought this on the strength of the name - which happens to be the nickname of one of my favourite guitarists - Steve 'The Deacon' Hunter. Turns out it is well named - like 'The Deacon's' playing there is complexity but not at the expense of it being accessible. There's a hint of smoke, good depth and a fine finish. I'd have liked to see this bottled at 45-46% ABV at this price - but that's a mere detail.

Amazing new whisky!
Really interesting new blended scotch . Packaging is really cool. Sweet, smokey, easy going peat flavour. Makes a fantastic Penicillin cocktail!
