Teeling continues its habit of using interesting casks to finish its whiskey, in this case, a Calvados cask. An exclusive to us, this Irish whiskey was selected by yours truly because it's very delicious and interesting. It was made with 100% malted barley before spending its entire maturation period in a cask that previously held the aforementioned apple-tastic French brandy. Just 330 bottles were taken from this single cask before the whiskey was bottled without filtration at 62.5% ABV.
An array of tropical and orchard fruits are drenched in honey and joined by sprinkles of nutmeg and a little chocolate.
More peppery spice joins the party alongside toffee apple, charred pineapple, maple syrup, and rich malt.
A good length with dried fruits and honey.
I found this to be very harsh, probably due to the high 62.5% alcohol content. Now, I don't usually do this, but I found a splash of water made it a bit more palatable. But, I didn't get any of the flavours mentioned in the "Tasting Notes", just the pepperiness! Not one of my favourites I'm afraid.
A few drops of water opens up the flavours on this one. Lots of fruit, reasonable amount of tanins too. Not as sweet as expected, but still reasonably so. Overall a good dram for the price (especially with the MoM prime discount)
I am a fan of various Teeling whiskies - especially the Blackpitts, but I found the Calvados Cask to be lacking. Yeah, it was good, but not exceptional, and certainly not worth the price!
I was looking forward to the Teeling, certainly the nose piqued my interest, sadly I am unsure about the taste. It is a very strong taste which initially seems nice but then overpowers with fruit! Maybe I need to try another.
