Tamnavulin Red Wine Cask

A terrific Tamnavulin, showing off the distillery's skills at using interesting cask finishes for its fab single malt Scotch whisky. This time, it's red wine! The whisky is initially aged in American oak barrels, but before it gets bottled, it enjoys a stay in French Cabernet Sauvignon wine casks, imparting a whole heap of warming dark fruit and sweet spice notes. We reckon this will make for an ace autumnal dram.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Marmalade on toast, stewed berries, nutty malt leading into warm vanilla.

Palate Damson jam, almond flakes, liquorice, cinnamon, a hint of Turkish delight floral richness.

Finish Ginger, strawberry, caramel, and dates.

Reviews for Tamnavulin Red Wine Cask Edition
Sweet
A gift from a friend who knows I like malts from the Speyside side of town as opposed to peaty malts it is very smooth but it's so sweet almost sickly that I would stay away unless you have a very sweet palate. Just my take on it.

Tried a dram sample. Didn't like red wine finish.
Won't buy it.

Not a bad dram
Agree with the notes by Masters of Malt has all the flavour profiles as described but felt the tastes of Strawberries lingered. On the whole not a bad bottle for the price. Definitely drinkable straight don't ice.

Great VFM. Cask flavor is palpable.
Great VFM. Costs more than their very good sherry cask offering, but it's commensurately better as the influence of the cask is so evident. I'll give it 5 stars since there's no 4.5 stars, but the deduction is for a slight lack of cohesion on the palate, plus the nose is average.

full and flavoured
A pleasant change from the norm, and in a line up of 10, you would nail this every time. This will not be everyone's taste, the wine notes are mellow but distinctive, with a summer fruit after taste, I loved it, but like I said, the majority may not

Great introduction to the world of wine finishes!
This Tamnavulin has quickly became a household favourite for me. A nice sweetness that compliments the speyside character of the whisky. I would definitely recommend this to someone new to whisky, or new to some of the more novel finishes we're seeing more and more of. For the taste on offer it's definitely good value too!

Could do better
Disappointed- wine notes on the nose and a nice smooth finish some while later but I wouldn’t buy it myself. Would prefer a good red and a glass of decent “regular” grain whisky to be honest. Being on a decent malt
