Tamnavulin Double Cask Bottling Note

Tamnavulin Double Cask was the first release from the distillery since the 1990s! Over the past 20 or so years, the distillery changed hands from Invergordon Distillers to Whyte & MacKay, closed a few years later and reopened in 2007. Much of its single malt output is used in blends, but a few casks of single malt would sneak out as indie bottlings to allow us a rare taste of Tamnavulin - but now they've got their very own expression! They initially mature it in American oak barrels before treating them to a finishing period in Sherry casks.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Chocolate mousse, extra thick double cream with a dusting of brown sugar, stewed apples and blackberries.

Palate: Christmas pudding, chocolate brownies, yellow plum and toffee-coated barley.

Finish: Spiced rum sweetness lingers on the finish.

Tamnavulin Double Cask Reviews

Bit like marmite, some love some hate

Not bad when it’s on offer but no in the same league as some I’ve paid the same price for

29th November 2020

Good, very well priced Malt.

Smooth and very pleasant on the tongue. Sitting nicely on the back of the throat. No nasty aftershock.
Just smooth all the way down.
Lovely aroma. A really good malt.
Not overpowering. Well worth a try !

27th November 2020

I use this for hot toddies

Not bad, but for a few quid more, you could get the Berry's blended malt, or a 'fiddich 12.

5th November 2020

Very good basement bargain malt!

Very easy to drink, slightly sweetish which I like, and incredible value for money. You can pay an awful lot of money for a good malt and my palate isn't good enough to tell the difference.

27th October 2020

Very smooth and easy to drink

18th October 2020

Super Sweet Goodness

Incredible stuff, really, really sweet, which I guess is very much what the palate describes. Love it, but I think a more than 2 or 3 and you'd be entering heart burn territory.

29th September 2020

... smooth chocolate notes ... like it a lot ...

21st September 2020

More like a blended whisky than a single malt

Disappointed in this. Smells very alcoholic and tastes more like a blended whiskey. My head did not like it the next day! Glad I only paid £20 and will be keeping it for cocktails as it is not nice enough to drink straight.

22nd August 2020

Its a £20 whisky.

Very slightly casked, very very slightly oaked. Ticks a few of the right boxes but a little bit pishy and nothingy overall. But then its often quite cheap and on offer for not much more than £20 so musnt grumble too much at that price. Let someone else buy it for you while you spend £20 on a half decent sherry. Or whatever.

21st August 2020

Excellent value

Amazing, tastes like condensed milk

19th August 2020

I like this, its become my regular tipple. It has a lovely flavour and there is pleasant afternotes. Plus it doesnt break the bank.

12th August 2020

Not bad, not great

It's OK, it's not a bad sip, quite some flavours

9th August 2020

Very Good value great tasting single malt.

Easy drinking, easy going. Hard to stop drinking it. ... lacking depth imo. But for the price. 👍

30th July 2020

Light, Sweet, easy to drink an

Not for the special occasion but come on....For £22ish there can be no complaints, light, sweet and easy to drink!!

23rd July 2020

ehh... ok

brought this for £20 quid in a co op and can decisively say that was exactly the right price for it. It doesn't taste dreadful, but is a little over sweet, with not much else going on. Will do you fine in a pinch, but if you're after a proper nice dram, look elsewhere.

14th July 2020

5 star

Love it. Bought it on an offer, but it's a really smooth single malt. Recommended

21st June 2020

Easy to drink and keeps you wanting more

This is a lovely introduction to whisky and continues to be a delicious, easy drinker. Not as complex as some but that is a strength, as you don't always need something too challenging when you're looking to relax of an evening. Plus I got a bottle in Morrisons last week for £20!

19th June 2020

Personally thought it was only just worth the £20 offer price I paid for it, nothing really stood out for it to be a £32 drink.

19th June 2020

Can't wait to try it again after lockdown #covid19

I had a great experience with this bottle....this is a class act and I understand why it's so popular in USA ...I was into the whisky chocolate cake by the end myself...try it yourself.

18th June 2020

Could get used to this

Was introduced to it during a NHS clap by a neighbour
Immediately liked the smoothness. I love the tasting notes but find the descriptions of it a bit OUT. You have a nice drink, let people discover without suggesting what they might not find.

13th June 2020

It doesn't taste chocolate at all.

.... Although it's an easy one for the beginners. I recommend if you never had tried any kind of whisky before. Its not strong and enjoyable.
Doesn't taste chocolate or Christmas pudding at all, but it does have a spice flavour in the end.

5th June 2020

Please respond to me, Jim Hope-Ross, at

Tamnavulin Double Cask was our single malt of choice when a group of us toured Scotland in the Spring of 2019. We want to buy a case for our personal consumption, but have been unsuccessful. I understand that you are endeavouring to export it to Canada, but that may take another full year.
Each year, the Calgary Burns Club (of which I am a life member & past President), holds a Burns Supper for upwards of 500 gentlemen and each year we try to feature an outstanding and reasonably priced single malt. We'd dearly love to feature TDC at next January's dinner.

4th June 2020

Very nice

Quite a nice drink for the price. Has a nice deep chocolate finish.

21st May 2020

Very ordinary.

It tastes and smells no better than Teachers firewater that I reluctantly drank in the '60s. I'm not naturally inclined to Speyside anyway, but this had virtually no nose and was very ordinary in the mouth. Quite where the descriptors above originate, I have absolutely no idea.
Take me back to Islay!

27th April 2020

The tasting notes above are, I take it, some kind of American joke (chocolate brownies and Christmas pudding !!!). I'm a Scotsman with a bottle of the cratur right in front of me and I've been drinking whisky for over sixty years. Should I keep this bottle's cap on? Please tell your USA customers that Scotch whisky is spelled without an "e"!

25th April 2020

Smooth and good tasting

Smooth, great tasting whisky at the price. Not a complex whisky, not much depth but good value.

10th April 2020

very good in fact my preference

exelant nose have always drank glenmorangie but much prefare this one

3rd April 2020

My absolute favourite

Have tried many whiskeys and love the Speyside single malts..
This is my new favourite..
Soft, smooth and chocolatier.

23rd March 2020

Excellent and unexpected find.

Baffled by how negative some folks can be to what has been a great find for me and others I know. Each to their own taste I guess, but I love the richness of this malt and at such a great price too.

21st February 2020

Surprised... Its rather tasty.

Nice for an "everyday".

20th February 2020

Totally worth it! Smooth chocolate notes for sure.

Served this at a public function, and the guys loved it. I love it, too. First whiskey whose main tasting note - chocolate - is for me truly there and palpable at that. Kudos to the distillery for making such a fine dram at such an affordable price!

10th February 2020

Entry level single malt of choice!

Coloured, no age statement and 40%... should be terrible, but really isn't! Big and punchy, not crazy sweet, and good depth, as well.

I won't upset people by letting on, what I pay for it, in Gibraltar.

9th February 2020

Tasted like bells

Poor tasted like a cheap blended whisky

3rd February 2020

Not one I would recommend

Had a bottle bought for me at Christmas, as a confirmed Sherry Head, whisky wise I was looking forward to drinking it. Unfortunately I have to say it
was not pleasant to drink, will keep it for use with mixers, would not recommend it

21st January 2020

Beautiful whiskey

This is my favourite whiskey. Tried quite a lot, and this one is so nice, it makes it the only one I drink neat. I am no expert, I just know if I like a whiskey or if I dont. And this one is a stunner. Too nice to drink with mixers.

6th January 2020

easy to drink

A good whiskey at a low price. Inside bottle two.

5th January 2020

like the taste and atomas

exerlent taste especialy with adrop ofwater or one ice cubecan recomend to all my friends

16th December 2019

Not entirely terrible for the price

Disappointed. The price is great, but I'd rather spend more on something else. I love a sherry-cask, but the combination of the oak and sherry here clashes somehow for me, and it's just very young. The nose has a few sherry notes, dates, sweetness, but all very vague and nothing to linger over. The flavour is...odd. I can't escape the slight taste of shaoxing wine or haw flakes...a kind of Chinese medicinal taste in the background. It's not an unpleasant taste, but I don't want it in my whisky. And unlike one of the other reviewers here, I found the aftertaste spicy enough but too short. I do find it an interesting dram, in the sense that it changes so much from nose to finish, but all of it is rather subtle, and not enough to be really satisfying. That said, again, it's cheap so you won't have lost much in the trying.

16th December 2019

Inoffensive, smooth,

My first single mallt, after getting bewitched by the Macallan Gold 50ml sample in Sainsburys I spent some time review hunting and finally tracked this down in my local Spanish supermarket. Easy to drink, fairly smooth, and mellow. Reminds me a bit of Jack Daniels,(the only other whisky I liked) but without the heavy smoke. On my second bottle now. Can’t wait for my first Glendronan. Christmas is coming.

13th November 2019

Incredible taste, much better than I expected from an entry level

I expected my first single malt to taste good, but didn't expect it to taste this good! Far superior to any other blended whisky I ever tasted. Floral, fruity, delicate yet rich, love everything about it.

15th October 2019

A very pleasant young Whisky.

A very smooth Whisky with a hint of spice.
It depends on your mood and taste buds as to whether or not you like this young double cask whisky. Personally I rather like it, not too harsh and definitely not smoky. I grew up knowing Whisky and whilst this one is young, its still got a kick to it. Please don't add Ice or Coke! That would just ruin it. Maybe a small amount of tepid water, just take the harshness off.

24th August 2019

A great whisky at the price

£20 on a well known online retailer and has been for some time. A great whisky at that price.

12th August 2019

Save your money and invest in a better scotch.

Passable only for the price. Needs to have water added.

25th July 2019

A decent single malt

A decent single malt from Speyside. Rich and full bodied, but still not that heavy. I like it very much and really recommend. A very good price too.

30th June 2019

Light and fairly sweet

Great inexpensive whisky if your not really in to the strong smokey sours.
Mellow flavour with more than a hint of caramel. If you're a bit partial to American Whiskey you'll love this.
My favourite for the money.

25th June 2019

Very pleasant malt at an excellent price.

Lovely whisky with an appealing color and a distinctive sweet taste.
Enjoyed best with just a splash of water to bring out the full flavor.
Excellent value.

19th June 2019

Nice addition to my whiskey shelf

started off with a bit of a bite but sweetened up at the finish quite enjoyable tho

19th June 2019

An accessible and affordable whisky

An above average whisky, which is likely to have wider appeal. For my tastes it was a little toffee-like and perhaps rather too "sweet". However, I enjoyed it. Recommended for whisky newbies.

3rd June 2019

This is a very pleasant whisky - hint of sweetness and exceptional value

29th May 2019

Nice, rich. Great lingering aftertaste.

Spotted this round the Co-Op at £22.00 so took the plunge with no previous knowledge.
The above description does seem to correlate with my particular sample. I'm pleased, it has qualities that are distinctive.

25th May 2019

A Nice daily dram at a great price.

Very nice. Easy to drink and at £32.00 great value for money.

9th March 2019

Very enjoyable

I suspect there’s some snobbery within some negative comments. This is a nice, smooth refreshing whiskey & for its price what’s not to like about it. For those who enjoy a smooth drink or those getting into whiskey this is a must.

25th February 2019

A good whisky...for a small price

A verry nice after dinner whisky.

18th February 2019

Better than the price would suggest

Tastes like a very caramelized apple turnover. Really easy drinking neat or with a dash of water. A bargain. Good for lovers of aberlour or balvenie.

12th February 2019

Inoffensive. even for the reduced price of ca £20, I won't be buying it again.

Inoffensive, is about the best I can say for this. So, even for the reduced price of ca £20, I won't be buying it again.

25th January 2019

A good whisky , nothing to dislike

Can't really disagree with master of malts own tasting notes.
I do enjoy the sweet lingering flavour .
A really nice whisky, and just before Christmas 2018 the supermarkets were selling it from £18 to £22 .

24th January 2019

Tasted before any other whisky. Short, tastes of parchment (not an expert but might this be from new wood casks?). Over caramalised.
No length - perhaps that's a mercy. Worst whisky I've ever tasted (malt or blend) - but might be to others' taste. Fellow whisky drinker equally unimpressed. Can a whisky be off? If so - my bottle is off. Down the sink or return to shop? Perhaps pass on to someone who doesn't mind adding coke.
Went on to: Chivas Regal (a present), added a very small drop of Springbank for fun - quite nice. Small Teachers HC - nice, then back to malts - Abelour A'bunadh (now your talking) then Abelour!

13th January 2019

Love it

Brilliant nice to drink whisky out of the ordinary. Love the taste.

3rd January 2019

Good for mixing, too raw for sipping

Ripe apples and pears on the nose but quite spirity. The palate delivers similar flavours but the young spirit overrides everything even with water. Will work served long with soda or ginger ale but too young and raw to be enjoyed as a sipper

19th October 2018

Grand and great value

Just posted my honest opinion after first dram then read the many reviews - some really undeservedly critical - its not a fifty year old middleton!! For heavens sake chaps enjoy it for what it is - a decent dram at a gigeaway price.

11th September 2018

Great tipple

Just found it on a visit to Lockerbie. A lovely smooth whiskey - reminiscent of a good Irish triple still and I should know!!!! Defo recommend it to anyone especially if just setting out on the whiskey trail. Slante!!

11th September 2018

4+plus as age ? Martin Allsop

Very nice tipple can't fault at this money always looking to taste new whiskey got lots of favourite ones this one is on the list

5th September 2018

A good summer whisky

Rather sweet but a decent dram for the summer. £22 with Amazon!

22nd August 2018

Too much caramel.

Very sweet. Its a nice enough dram but not very high on my list for the price. Plenty i'd rather drink. That said we have to try them dont we. The quest is never ending.

21st June 2018

A sweet, fruity bargain.

This is a very good value whisky considering it can be had from the supermarket for 22 GBP. The description above of "Christmas pudding" is very accurate. It is a sweet whisky. Whoever said it had an overpowering taste of pine is clearly confused as to which whisky they were drinking.

7th June 2018

Its ok.

How strange the different views on this whisky. I have tasted many malts and this for the price is very good, add a little spring water to it.

21st May 2018

Decent, subtle dram

Light, fruity, chocolate notes later. This is a pleasant dram. I can't believe folk on here rubbishing it, comparing it with south Isla whiskies - they're totally different drinks. This is a subtle whisky, as most Speysides are. Not a classic, nor spectacular but it's a decent dram, with plenty flavour. I wouldn't knock it, especially at some of the knock-down prices I've seen it. I'm enjoying it.

10th May 2018

Fruity, toffee and fresh - great value

Great whiskey for the value - £22 in Tesco.. really tasty. Fruity and sweet on the nose, pleasant on the palette and long spicy and sweet finish - I will get it again when it's on offer

13th April 2018

Terrific value scotch.

Smooth and sweet undertones, very easy drinking. Great flavours & terrific value.

6th April 2018

More please

Been tasting malts for only a few years and have not matured yet to the peat and smoked types, this is a great find and is a great tasting, drink anytime single malt, which does not catch the throat, but is smooth and lends itself to over indulgence. More please

4th April 2018

Tastes like freshly cut wood (pine sap)

After reading the below reviews, I bought my first bottle of this whisky in Morrisons this evening.

I honestly wouldn’t waste your money on this whisky.

The smell is chemically and isn’t pleasant.

The taste is of pine sap, overpowering anything else which may be hiding behind it. It’s really not pleasant and not my palate.

I drink a lot of different whiskies, a bottle a month from Ardbeg, Abunadh, Bowmore, Craigalaghie etc through the alphabet.

This is poor and shouldn’t be on sale. I’m going to Morrison’s tomorrow to take back the bottle as it’s undrinkable and wrong.

2nd March 2018

Value Malt

Pleasant sipper, won't set the heather alight but enjoyable all the same

2nd February 2018

Another nice malt from Speyside

Very nice drop of whiskey well worth the £30 mellow toffee tasting will buy again good work.

30th January 2018

Apricot+ cinnamon on the nose and quite a bit of Chardonnay on the taste. Lovely Speyside, be great if they released an aged statement whisky

23rd January 2018

Good beginner whisky

I'm a beginner to whisky, but I'm fond of this. Nice toffee scent and a sweet, dessert-like taste. I'm sure in comparison to other whiskies it's not amazing, but for a beginner like me, I think it's great!

21st January 2018

So, so

Nice colour, toffe nose, but lacks the finish aftertaste

17th January 2018

Not to my taste

I’m reminded of Talisker. Which for me isn’t a good thing. Simply put, this doesn’t taste remotely like a Speyside to me. I’m a Dalwhinnie and Glenmorangie man, so this tastes completely alien

13th January 2018

Decent Malt to share with your mates before the classics.

Good packaging. Nice golden colour. Toffee nose and flavour. Little depth as you might expect from new releases ( you have to start somewhere..). I look forward to aged versions. 12 year olds? Should be good.

8th January 2018

A great start to a new beginning

Glad to have tried and enjoyed this. A good double cask expression with subtle complexity. So glad to know they are back up and running and cant wait to see what else comes out next.

5th January 2018

I didn't enjoy this..

Very disappointing whisky, from poor quality maturation casks I believe, with far too much sherry influence. I've only discarded one bottle of malt, this was it.

28th December 2017

Disappointment. Too much caramel flavour that leaves a bitter taste and the American cask touch is too strong.

3rd December 2017

Not as good as it used to be.

The light coloured Tamnavulin of the old days was my favourite whisky. I thought it better than all others I had ever tested. This was a slight disappointment. I think there is too much caramel type flavours (from the burnt American oak ?), that overpower the subtleties from a distillery that had produced one of the most sort after whiskies by connoisseurs. A lighter touch next time, please !! Tamnavulin can produce a whisky for whisky drinkers, but this was marred by trying to make it acceptable to too wide an audience. Back to Caol Ila in the meantime for me.

29th November 2017

Simple, light, almost refreshing.

Lovely straight drinking, light thinking malt. A present from a co-worker for some help and just the right mixture of lightness and short taste that I'd be happy to pull out for anyone to try.

It's place in the cabinet will be to distract people from the bottles at the back ;)

21st November 2017

Nice and easy

Fruity, mellow, good for an autumn evening. Lacks a little for depth and finish but good value for money.

19th November 2017

Lovely smooth velvety taste just what you expect from a Speyside malt whisky well worth the price at just over £30.00

23rd October 2017

Good for the price but still a tad raw.

This has a lovely warm woody sweet nose to it. The finish is a little like white chocolate and home baking but sadly a tad rough. Still a steal for the price.

19th August 2017

Light, playful, and great value.

Very nice mixture of bourbon and sherry cask notes here, with chocolate and dried fruit coming to the fore and some light creamy citrus in the background. Excellent value for money.

14th August 2017

Raw whisky lacking any depth of flavour

Poor. Tastes very rough around the edges with little to taste beyond that. However I had it after a Caol Ila 18 and it was always going to suffer after that. In my experience, the taste you get from a whisky varies depending on what you have been tasting before it. Tamnavulin Double Cask may go well with pickled onion monster munch to give it a bit of bite.

13th August 2017
