At 45 years old, this is the oldest ever release from Talisker. But that’s not the only unusual thing about this whisky. Dubbed 'Glacial Edge', it’s the final part in the Talisker Xpedition Oak Series. As with the other releases in this series, the distillery has partnered with Parley, an environmental organisation. This involved taking some heavily charred American oak casks to the Artic and exposing them to four days of extremely cold weather which apparently affected how the whisky which was then finished in these frost-bitten casks reacted with the wood.
Full maritime nose with notes of seaweed, iodine and salt followed by aromas of dried fruits, vanilla, marzipan and sandalwood.
Smooth and mouthfilling with a toffee sweetness leading to pungent chilli, black pepper and wood smoke with definite salty tang.
Very long, with that spice slowly fading into a subtle waxiness with aromatic woodsmoke lingering for minutes afterwards.
