Strathisla 12 Year Old Bottling Note

This is a new edition of the Chivas malt Strathisla 12 year old, a fruity and sherry-rich single malt from Speyside.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Soft oak and hints of candied peel. A little floral character too, with notes of spice and Danish pastries.

Palate: Malty core with notes of sultanas and cinnamon pastries. Allspice, cooked apple and mince pies.

Finish: Long finish. Very fruity.

Overall: A good all-rounder - excellent value for money...

Strathisla 12 Year Old Reviews

Try it if you can still find a bottle!

I've heard this has been discontinued which is a shame. This whisky is one of the best quality/price single malt I've tasted.
You won't find any good Speyside single malt at this price.
Try it if you can still find a bottle!

Be circumspect when reviewing

Began taking a pre-dinner whisky on a daily basis in 1969 &, over the years, have refined it to a measure, or two, of decent blended stuff with added hard water - the Scots' will crucify me - at room temperature to elicit the subtleties of even an average brew (Americans' take note; no bloody ice) followed by a neat measure of Strathisla 12 which brings out the best in its subtle nose & flavour. Often content myself with simply sampling the nose for a good minute - time it; quite a long time -before moving on. Longmorn 15-y-o, non chill filtered, was rather superior to the new, fancy bottled, 16-y-o offering. MacAllan is also now a shadow of its former self.

One of my favourites

Creamy, fruity, cinnamon and oh so smooth. May lack the complexities for seasoned whisky drinkers but very pleasant and easy drinking for most

23rd March 2019

Sophisticated, rewardingly complex.

Unexpectedly sophisticated, demanding a careful appraisal. Avoid rushing to judgement as this is a whisky the brings great rewards for the expert willing to be patient and understand its complexity.

29th December 2018

School leaver stuff

Nothing going on. Beginners whisky. It wont turn anyone off the stuff, but unlikely to get anyone hooked either. Loads more interesting whisky around at same price range.

2nd December 2018

excellent

Quality unbeatable price, I love its finish.

16th November 2018

Strongly fruity, pleasing, value for money.

Pleasant and fun. Strong smell of oak and flowers. Especially fruity with flavors of cinnamon, apple and cherry. Spices I did not find. Very good for everyday use.

14th October 2018

Versatile. Easy drinking with enough complexity to keep things interesting.

Easy drinking with a satisfyingly friendly taste yet has enough subtle notes to keep things interesting should you wish to explore its characteristics.

Floral and citrus taste notes are accompanied by smooth caramel and a woody sherry foundation, with a brown sugar malty bite and hints of delicate spices.

Currently my go-to daily whisky since it is versatile and on offer in my local shop. I paid £27 but the usual price locally is £37 which i feel is a little steep. I would say at £27 it is great value for money.

12th September 2018

Safe, simple and pleasant. Typical Speyside entry level.

Same league as Aberfeldy 12 and Aberlour 12. Pleasant, fruity, delicate and not overly complex. Easy sipper, good to just sit t and watch telly with. Do not expect much engagement from it, but it is good, everyday dram. Lots of caramel looks a bit silly.
Just get it on sale in your local supermarket, otherwise it tends to be a bit overpriced for what it is.

My Current Favourite, Easy and Smooth

A new discovery for me and it has quickly become my current favourite. I find it easy to drink and full of flavour, with a lingering, satisfying aftertaste. This was a birthday present for me, but I will be buying another bottle soon.

20th August 2018

A very good one

I’m a single malt drinker. This is one of my favourite Speyside. Really worth for the price.

4th August 2018

Fantastic, smooth malt to be savoured.

This is a stunning single malt for the price. Toffee and orange peel all the way on the nose. Fruity and floral on the palette with a loooooong finish and sultanas/raisins at the end. Got this for a bargain price and well worth every penny and more.

1st July 2018

A weekday whisky

Like a decent budget wine, it’s full of ripe fruit and pleasant on the palate but maybe lacking the complexity of some higher value brands or bottles. A very nice night cap to dim the day but it doesn’t light the fires that other Malts do.

5th June 2018

Very good

I was very excited to try this, Chivas is one of my favourite blends. And the Strathisla is hard to find, so it took me a while. I liked it, lots of Sherry but not overwhelming, enough to make it interesting without making me sickly (As opposed to Glendronach 18 Alardice which I can have one dram and then that's it for the night). The closest other whisky I can compare this to is Royal Brackla 16 yo. An excellent single malt.

24th May 2018

Easy to drink, easy to forget

Smooth and pleasant, a good entry whiskey. But it does lack character, mainly in that it doesn’t leave a lasting taste in the mouth. Quickly drunk, quickly forgotten.

15th May 2018

Must have!

Incredible for the money.

22nd March 2018

Velvet smooth & screams out for a 2nd dram.

Tried Strathisla 12 yr old single malt for the 1st time today. A beautiful smooth whisky & cries out to have 2nd dram! I don’t always get what the professional tasters get when they describe drinks but this is like a velvet apple strudel, is most get a hint of cinnamon as you would in an apple pie. Highly recommend this dram. Dave.

4th March 2018

Must have

5/5 excellent value for money...

3rd March 2018

A personal favourite

I am not a serious whiskey drinker but I found this whiskey very easy drinking although pretty complex. If like me you are not a huge fan of the peatty whiskey, this one is worth a try.

17th January 2018

Must have

Excellent with very fruity. Definitely value for the money.

11th January 2018

Good deal for a decent whisky

This one is not going to knock your socks off, but it is easy drinking with a smooth feel. Decent taste. Nothing to write home about but for under $40 US, this is a good buy.

8th January 2018

Lovely drink very smooth

Very smooth whiskey
We decided to try it for New Year’s Eve
Highly recommended
Has a subtle taste of Chiva’s but matured and perfected to such a smooth fine tasting whiskey

31st December 2017

Very mild

It's got an amazing nose bit really lacks flavour. I guess it's a brilliant base malt for blending or easing people into whisky.

23rd December 2017

Brilliant

Great whisky

15th December 2017

Excellent smooth whisky

This has been my fathers favourite whisky for decades. I decided to review it after reading some of the quite bizarre reviews that are on here. No I don't work for Chivas Regal. Personally I like my whiskies to have a bit more character - I am more of a Islay Malt fan, but if you prefer smooth delicate malts then this is one of the smoothest. I can understand some whisky drinkers finding it a bit too delicate, but among speyside malts I would rate it as excellent, especially at this price. Whenever I visit my father I always appreciate a glass ;)

3rd December 2017

See above

Bloody marvellous! A bargain.

3rd July 2017

Smooth and mellow.

If you like your whisky smooth and mellow this is for you.
Make up your own mind.
It does it for me.

19th June 2017

Makes a cracking Hot Toddy!

Had this bought for me for Christmas. Very pleasant, one to give a novice as oppose to someone more well versed.

I decided to sacrifice it for a hot toddy one wet chilly January evening. Wow! What a toddy. The cinnamon and spiciness really complements the cloves and lemon juice/peel. Might pick up another bottle as my go to toddy malt.

Should be renamed, Strathisla 12 "The Toddy Malt". Send a cheque in the post Chivas Bros!

6th April 2017

Sweet and floral

Love the smell, it tastes quite sweet. I get a bit of fruit in the taste. I preferred it with water as found it a bit hot without. I'm enjoying it but doubt I'd buy another

12th March 2017

Really mellow, smooth, moorish.

I don't know what the complaints are about. I am not a novice when it comes to whiskey. Nor do I purport to be some know it all. I usually like strong peaty numbers like Laphroig and Ardbeg. I agree this drop might seem bland to some but I have to say that it is delicious and, having paid £27 for mine at the supermarket, I am very pleased and have just gone and bought another while it's still on offer.

6th March 2017

Decent but better out there for same price

I love that people from the distillery and chivas have come on here and rated this the best whisky since sliced bread.
This whisky has a good price point and is pretty unchallanging, and inexperienced malt drinkers will like it, for more experienced drinkers, you may find it bland.

27th January 2017

Great Value

Very smooth and flavourful scotch. Highly recommended!

6th January 2017

Tasted

Tasted at the Stathisla distillary in Scotland and loved it

10th December 2016

Middle of the Road

Good whisky for the price point. Think Master of Malt have got the description spot on. Can definitely get the Danish pastry nose!! Have had this bottle for about two years. Just finished it tonight, drinking the last glass as I type. It's worth the money and one for the cabinet, especially if you can get it on offer.

26th November 2016

Strtahilsla 12yrs

Excellent stuff in low budget

27th July 2016

Excellent single malt

My favourite whiskey you can buy in the supermarket. Superb smooth drink.

30th April 2016

Shit

I bought this in sweden by advice from the monopoly "systembolaget" and i got to say i should have chosen Ancnoc instead of this... The alcoholic taste takes the upper hand of this. Even if there is some tastes the taste of alcohol does it to much on the bad side. I would like to give it a 2 but the price is the only thing keeping me from it. Dont buy this, mainstream shit that shivas have optimized just for the books.

5th February 2016

not fantastic

This is good to have in your cabinet among the other whiskies and try it from time to time. Not a favorite one, it Worths its price, it's delicate and smooth but that's all I Think.
You don't get a "wow" taste in the mouth but it tastes better than the balvenie double Wood in my opinion
rating 6 + half Point for the price

8th January 2016

Progress did not Trump Tradition

Preferred the previous edition with its 43% content and unique bottle. The new edition is still good value but not sure why they went mainstream in taste and looks.

30th November 2015

sad

Compared to the "old" bottling; they have lowered alc.%, switched from an awesome looking bottle to a clean and boring mainstream bottle... and increased the price... please...

9th September 2015

Get one!

À very nice single malt, awsome! If you like fruity whiskeys. Well made, great plats and wonderful finish.

23rd August 2015

Gran Whisky

Muy bueno. Muy muy bueno.

23rd August 2015

Judd

Delicious anytime, but sweeter with more pear and apple after resting in the glass awhile! Amazing finish!

10th August 2015

let it sit

I agree with a previous reviewer, I bought this bottle back in February and I thought it had a little too much bite. After letting it sit for several months I decided to go back to it and am very satisfied with the depth and sherried chacter. Lovely fruit finish.

7th August 2015

Mmmm....

Well made. Has respect in Scotland and is the heart of all Chivas. The best highland, speyside ever made.

29th July 2015

Strathisla 12 year old

We think this whisky is very smooth and has a wonderful flavour.

29th May 2015

Disappointed

I like my malt whiskies but have to say am not sure with this particular malt. Bought a bottle yesterday as it was on offer in my local supermarket. Something is definitely missing in the taste compared with other Speyside malts. I will give it another chance hopefully it will improve but I am not holding my breath.

7th May 2015

Give it time and you will appreciate

I opened this bottle a d thought it was nice but had a little bite. After letting it sit in my cabinet for 6 weeks I decided to give it another go. I am simply amazed at it's depth now. No bite but tastes of a quality Sherried dram. At this point, it's depth and flavor seem of a 43% abv instead of 40%. Amazing value for money.

19th April 2015

This is my new favorite

A very nice whisky with a beautiful warm finish, quite malty with almost a hint of chocolate

16th February 2015

Well Made

You cannot go wrong with this. Its well made and very pleasant to drink. I buy this regulary ( when the price is right) and always enjoy. Easy drinking and good quality.

Drunk in Norfolk. The whisky capital of England.

20th January 2015

Subtle and soft on the pallet. Im no whisky expert but it is my drink of choice and from now on this will be my whisky of choice. Excellent value for money also premium feel in a affordable price range. Thank you

10th January 2015

Whisky

It's whisky. Other than that it has no stand out character for me and pulls no punches. Ok to have in the cabinet, but I'll be reaching for something a bit feistier most of the time.

1st December 2014

A whiskey that grows on you.

Taste is a little overly delicate and light at first, but it certainly develops over time. A very long finish and certainly tasty dram, although there is some residual bitterness.

19th November 2014

My favorite

I also do not like strong smokey scotch. This was very flavorful and smooth. Best 12 year single on the market in my opinion.

24th October 2014

12 year old new edition

Beautiful nose, and love the fruity aroma with hint of apples. I don't like peaty, smoky whisky's, so this is perfect for me, I live in Aviemore at the start of the Whisky's trail and have samples many Speyside and Highland whisky's and this is my favourite so far, it's gets 5 stars!

6th August 2014

Very nice tasting whisky

Very good tasting whisky, worth the money.

27th February 2014

Subtle and spicy

Initial flavours are fairly subtle - develops in to a spicy taste, like cinnamon as mentioned above. Overall nice and smooth - though not my favourite.

27th February 2014

Евгений из Украины

Не понравился. Спирт слишком выразительный. Свеженький фрукты, солод, несколько пряный - лучше растворить в бокале кубик льда - больше прорисовывается вкус и уходит спирт.
