Springbank
Scotland
Single Malt
Here we have a well-sherried, unpeated and triple distilled single malt from Campbeltown's Springbank distillery, released under the Hazelburn name. It was distilled in 2004, and aged completely in oloroso sherry casks for the entire 14 year maturation. The liquid was then bottled in 2019, with an outturn of 9,900 bottles.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Fruit and nut chocolate, rich dark chocolate mocha, raisins and marzipan, berry coulis and caramelised walnuts.
A hint of leather, with jammy blackberry and milk chocolate praline, followed by freshly baked blueberry muffins, a pinch of pepper and pear drops.
Sherried fruits, salted caramel, liquorice, roasted coffee beans and waxy notes, as the pepper returns for a lengthy finish.
Agreed with the comment below. Tough choice btwn this and Longrow Red 11 for my whisky of the year (<£60) Not forgetting Springbank CS 2019(2nd released)
This whisky is my WOTY hands down! This was absolutely a sensational whisky, different from the standard sherry bombs you would get. The review that talks about sulfur I don't seem to find at all, it's more that dunnage funk and if you know Springbank you know what im talking about. The reason I love this so much is that dunnage funk adds a savory element to the nose, which detracts this from being a full-on sweet dominated sherry bomb. If you like bacon, pancakes with maple syrup - this is the whisky for you. Can't get enough of this, stocked up 3x bottles to carry this experience with me through the decade.
I am a big fan of their last year 13 yrs oloroso but their 14 is .a few notches up. Packed with dense fruits, rich caramel, robust and intense a pure pleasure to sip slowly. Too bad, it's sold out. If I knew I would have bought more.
This is my second bt.and I didn't detect any sulfur. All I got was ripe autumn fruits and nectar. I love Springbank, they do all the right things. If there's only one distillery I could choose from, Springbank is my choice. Craft quality at price everyone can afford.
I found the taste of this to seem a bit eggy and sulfuric. It has sulfur. Here is a review from My Annoying Opinions that backs up my contention: Palate: Pretty much as promised by the nose. A little saltier on the second sip. The texture is fine. With time it gets earthier but also more tannic. Water turns those tannins more sulphurous—giving me that furry feeling on the tongue.
