The second limited edition Swedish single malt whisky from the Spirit of Hven distillery, who plan to release five more whiskies in the Seven Stars series over the next five years. This expression is called Merak, named after one of the stars in Ursa Major constellation (AKA - the Big Dipper / AKA - the Plough).
To create this single malt, Spirit of Hven used a mix of American, French and Spanish oak casks to mature their Organic certified spirit. Only 25 casks were blended together, after which it was bottled by hand with no chill-filtration and numbered.
Candy apple and red fruit sweetness, followed by dark cherries, ginger and creamy vanilla. A drop of water unlocks some peaty smoke deep within.
Spiced up front, crushed black pepper and cinnamon joined by oily barley. It slowly turns sweet and juicy with a hint of citrus peels.
Smoke lasts and lasts on the finish.
A shining star of a dram, bright and warming. It certainly lives up to the high standards set by the Dubhe.
I gained this as one of the samples from the Whisky advent calendar and is one of the most expensive whiskies I've been able to taste. So excited to try this would be an understatement. Nose - Smokey with a hint of malt and cherries. I might not be the most experienced or refined whisky drinkers but this one smelt enticing. Taste - Slightly spicy at first but that quickly turned into syrup and malt on the tongue which stayed around for a while. Overall - A very tasty whisky and warming enough to be very welcoming during the winter months. The achocol level isn't too high to ruin the taste which stays with you and coats the mouth. Lovely. If only I could afford a full bottle!!!
On paper sounds great. In reality I didn't feel the candy apple at all, just the pepper. Bit too rough for my taste.
Fantastic stuff! a distinct but soft smokiness, hints of licorice and leather will make your tastebuds go wow! Add a little water and it opens up with toffee and vanilla to. definitely the best swedish whisky at the moment!
If you liked the first release, you'll this! With the first release, Dubhe, this whisky is even more complex, even though it's young! This destillery really has all the signs of a gem!
I am quite new to the whiskey experience and i find that the taste istnt that refined, a bit to much taste of alcohol and not quite as good as i hoped for.
