Supremely sippable single grain Scotch whisky here from Spearhead, produced at the Loch Lomond Distillery! There's some really rather interesting stuff going on with this one – it's a single grain made with 100% malted barley and given a rather long fermentation time, before being distilled in a Coffey still, and then matured in ex-bourbon barrels. Before bottling, it's given a six month finishing period in a combination of traditionally toasted and infrared toasted barrels. Well worth checking out, this one!
Stewed summer berries, runny caramel, citrus blossom.
Still has plenty of sweet fruit notes to it, now with hints of red apple and pear, soon joined by lime zestiness, brown sugar, and cassia.
Toasted marshmallow, a smidge of oak spice, honey.
I'm not a whisky expert, I like a good dram recreationally in small doses. Spearhead was a huge surprise and is honestly one of the easiest whiskies I've ever tasted. From nose to afterglow it's just, to me, exactly what a whisky should be. No TCP/Iodine nastiness, no eyewatering afterburn when drunk neat, just a really pleasant example of a well crafted spirit.
Bought this whisky for it's differential points compared to classic scotch - grain whisky distilled in coffey still and using infrared toasted casks! Very pleasant and smooth. makes great cocktails!
Coffey still produces poor mouthfeel. The flavor, which is nice, is also very light. Was sold a bill of goods on this, but comparing it to Deanston Virgin Oak (which is similar in many ways but NCF and pot stilled) has been very educational.
Rich, sweet, easy going deliciousness. Great price for a great dram,
Highly recommend this for any whisky drinkers - whether you're new to the category or a seasoned sipper. Those flavours of coconut, banana and honey are so delicious! They shine through perfectly in cocktails but also just nice to sip along side a beer - definitely my new favourite whisky!
