Smögen 4 Year Old French Quarter

A cute name for a 4 year old peated (45PPM) Swedish whisky made with Optic barley and matured in 4 freshly toasted smaller-than-normal 120 litre casks from Cognac.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Malty with plenty of peat and oak spice. Somewhat coastal.

    Palate

More spicy cereal, oak, mixed berries, black pepper and thick peat with some balancing sweetness.

    Finish

    Warming and comforting.

Epic - like a 3D movie, even better, an IMAX experience!

Oh yes. Smogen is sensational. It is BIG whisky. I am lucky to know Par, though have yet (unaccountably) to visit this stunningly beautiful part of Sweden where he lives and works (about 90 mins North of Gothenburg – Goteborg). I have two of his whiskies – the first is the Sherry Project 1:4 which is a glorious sherry monster of a dram. Superbly crafted – great barrel, but spirit not drowned by sherry as so often can be the case. The second one is heavily peated, and also counterpoised by Sherry – the French Quarter. Both of these are naturally cask strength. The London Strane Gin is fine too, Navy strength particularly. If Henric Molin from the Orosund island of Hven (Spirit of Hven) is the Georges Seurat of Svensk whisky, then Par Caldenby is the Vincent van Gogh!! Both produce masterpieces, but different styles. Indeed, with Herno Gin in Harnosand, and Box whisky in Bjartra (I was lucky enough to visit Herno (near Harnosand, on the Hoga Kusten) and meet Jon Holmgren in 2014, and I also went to Box for their 8th festivalen (2014) and the 10th (2016). Sweden is producing some stunning high-quality spirits. No longer just vodka and aqvavits!! Go Sverige Go!!

Epic whisky on the very largest canvas imaginable!

The whiskies produced by Smogen (Par Caldenby) are amongst the finest in the "Rest of the World" category. And that is a lot of whiskies, in a lot of countries. This is sensational. Cask strength. Huge primary colours. I think this style is "Van Gogh" in its use of bold shapes, and colour palette - a masterpiece. The Smogen distillery itself is in the West Coast of Sweden, about 90 minutes from Gothenburg-Goteborg - unaccountably I have yet to visit - though I have met Par many times at whisky shows. I would seriously look out for these whiskies - not many, and not many per barrel - one of the challenges is finding out about them, and then tracking them down. Well done indeed to MoM for getting the link. Strongly recommended. As with other Svensk destilleri, Sweden (Sverige) is up at the top of modern whisky production, not for quantity, but, quality (think Box, Spirit of Hven and now Smogen).
